There’s no in-game tutorial or guide , but fortunately, there are many online resources, including The Tarkov Central , that help you understand the game and gather essential data. It’s important to have the patience to study the basic information and grasp a few mechanics before diving into raids using the money, weapons, and gear you start with. Remember, in EFT, when you die, you lose everything you're carrying . It's true that you have your trusted Secure Container and the option to insure your gear , but insurance comes at a cost. Without a basic understanding of the game before your first raids, it's easy to quickly run out of both money and gear. Of course, there are ways to recover from a total loss, but this would make the early game even more challenging and frustrating. (If you've already lost everything before reading this tutorial, check out this article to learn what to do next ). Success in EFT isn’t just about being an experienced FPS player with good aim and shooting skills. It helps, of course, but it’s not enough. There’s a lot to learn—I still discover new details every day—and you’ll need to adapt to EFT’s unique dynamics. For your first raid, try not to overdo it . An experienced player might aim to complete all 5 missions on Ground Zero in a single raid, but you’re still getting familiar with the map, combat, and player movement. You might find yourself disoriented, and if you spend too much time, you could risk missing the extraction or end up rushing, making noise, and missing potential threats around you. It’s better to focus on just one or two missions at a time. For instance, you could try completing Prapor’s mission on Ground Zero and then move on to Therapist’s , which is straightforward, especially if you'll have Emercom Checkpoint available for extract, which is right there and you can immediately get out. Escape from Tarkov offers the option to raid as either a SCAV or a PMC. While the PMC is your main character , playing as a Scav means stepping into the shoes of one of the surviving civilians in the Norvinsk region's conflict. Scavs roam the maps in search of resources to defend themselves and survive. Raiding as a Scav can also be a gameplay style or a way to engage in role play. In fact, there are “Scav mains,” players who prefer raiding in this role and rarely use their PMC. However, for most players, it’s a way to mitigate the unforgiving nature of EFT , both in terms of risk and the tension it creates. One notable aspect to consider is that although the Scav you play as seems like a new character each time, their skills improve and level up over time. The more you use the Scav, the better their skills and stats become, just like your PMC's. Advantages of Using the SCAV Free equipment : Scavs spawn with random but free gear, meaning it’s zero-risk. This allows you to play more relaxed or even more aggressively, as you don’t have to worry about losing valuable gear. Neutrality with other Scavs : Other Scavs won’t attack you as long as your reputation with the trader Fence is positive. Reputation Bonuses : The higher your reputation with Fence, the more benefits you gain: Improved Scav starting gear, including high-value items like a TerraGroup Labs access keycard . Reduced costs for services like the Car Extracts for your PMC. Larger BTR storage for transferring items to your hideout without extracting yourself. Faster Scav Case delivery times in your hideout. Higher resale prices when selling items to Fence, as well as access to level 2 stock. More extract points when playing as a Scav. Cooperation from AI Scavs, who will follow or assist you if requested. Neutrality with Scav Bosses once you reach reputation level 6, allowing you to stay close to them, assist them, and loot defeated PMCs. Disadvantages of Using the SCAV While using the Scav have clear advantages, there are also drawbacks: Cooldown timer : Scavs are not always available. After each Scav raid, there is a cooldown period that decreases as your Fence reputation improves. You can reduce this timer further by building and upgrading the Intelligence Center in your hideout. Random gear : Scavs spawn with unpredictable equipment, which usually includes low-quality weapons, ammo, and armor. Healing items are often limited. Reputation penalties : Killing other Scavs (AI and players) or Bosses (except Partisan) makes you a Rogue Scav, which results in a loss of Fence reputation. Also, all Scavs, Bosses and their guards will become hostile and shoot you. This restriction forces you to avoid the usual “shoot-on-sight” mentality, which can lead to hesitation (and death) in critical moments. Late spawn : Scavs usually spawn into maps after the raid has already started. This means: Less time to gather loot or hunt for enemies (but also a quieter raid, with fewer players remaining, and probably some bodies to loot). Scav Karma and Fence Reputation Scav Karma is represented by the reputation you have with the trader Fence. If your Fence reputation falls below zero , all Scavs and Bosses will become hostile, attacking you on sight. Additionally, your Scav's random starting gear will be of much lower quality. To see how to gain or lose Scav Karma (or Fence reputation) and its effect, check this page in the EFT Wiki . When to use the Scav As mentioned earlier, every player has their preferences. I recommend using the Scav to learn a map you’re unfamiliar with, have a more relaxing raid and to look for loot . When I was learning to play, after running a few raids in Practice Mode to get a first look at the map and learn extraction points, I used to do a few Scav runs to better understand the layout, hot zones, and typical players movements (while also looting items and gear from dead body I found). Additionally, I sometimes used the Scav just to extract and pass its gear to my PMC , either to save money or to start a raid with minimal equipment. A sort of "Almost zero to hero", aiming to improve my loadout by killing other PMCs (or looting already dead ones), or just see what's going to happen without fear of losing my hard-earned gear (Gear Fear ). Now I use the Scav whenever I want to enjoy a quieter raid with less anxiety or when I want to avoid risking money and gear with my PMC (or when I have just the time for a quick run in Factory). Fun fact : even the most relaxed raid using a Scav can become extremely tense and anxiogenic once you find by chance a great piece of loot and suddenly you want to extract alive to take it home with you! To know more about how, why and when to play the Scav I suggest watching this great video by the unmached streamer Pestily: HOW TO USE YOUR SCAV! - GUIDE - Escape from Tarkov Next: PvP or PvE? comments debug Comments Write a comment Write a comment Share Your Thoughts Be the first to write a comment.

This leaves you vulnerable and wastes time, but it’s crucial to know that you can perform other actions while looting . To loot a container (dead body, backpack, crate, med bag, sports bag, etc.), you click, the inventory interface opens, and then you must wait as your character inspects the container’s contents, revealing each item one by one. If there's only one item, looting is swift. But if there are multiple items, it can drag on for several seconds . It is vital to know —and exploit—the fact that, simultaneously while your character inspects the container, you can perform other actions: Heal yourself Perform surgery Refill magazines with ammo Eat/Drink Reload your weapon This way, you optimize your time by handling these crucial tasks upfront. Once you finish looting, you’ll be combat-ready and have saved a ton of time. TIP: With the Attention skill maxed out, you have a 50% chance of revealing a container’s contents instantly. (But maxing out your skills takes a lot of time!) More Details While you wait for your character to finish inspecting the container you opened, you cannot right-click an item to open its menu and select an option—but you can double-click an item to use it. This means you can double-click a bottle of water to drink it or a food item to eat it. Likewise, you can double-click a medkit, a bandage, a tourniquet, or a splint to heal yourself , stop bleeding, or treat a fracture. In addition to double-clicking, you can click and hold the left mouse button to drag an object. For example, you can move items to organize your inventory or make room for what you’ll find in the container. Similarly, you can grab a stack of ammo and drag it onto an empty magazine to refill it simultaneously. And so on. Other Actions You Can Perform Simultaneously This isn’t strictly related to looting, but remember: there are other actions you can do simultaneously. It’s important to experiment and get comfortable with all these mechanics—they’ll save you time and let you get back to your mission or the fight. While refilling an empty magazine with ammo: You can also reload your weapon by right-clicking on the weapon and selecting “reload” or by right-clicking on another magazine (not the one you’re loading) and choosing “install.” While reloading your weapon: You can open your inventory and start other actions, such as refilling an empty magazine with ammo, eating, or drinking. While eating or drinking: You can open your inventory and move items around to organize them. Instant Weapon Reload It’s also very useful to know that under certain circumstances you can reload your weapon instantly: If you’re eating, drinking, healing any negative effect (including performing surgery with a surgical kit) : Right-click your weapon and choose “reload” or right-click a magazine and choose “install”—and the reload will be instantaneous and animation-free. If you open your inventory and right-click your weapon and choose “reload” (or right-click a magazine and choose “install”) while holding another weapon (secondary weapon, pistol, or melee weapon). The same applies if you’re holding your primary weapon and perform “reload” on your secondary weapon or sidearm, or “install” on their respective magazines—they’ll reload instantly. This trick can be a lifesaver during a hectic firefight when you’re running out of ammo. However, it requires you to keep a cool head and remember the trick on the fly, and a bit of practice. You need to be able to stop in a safe spot, change the weapon you're holding, open your inventory, right-click, and select the option, so it really depends on the situation and your speed. This means that, unlike in most FPS games where the alternative to ADS is hip fire, your character keeps the weapon shouldered and can shoot with high accuracy at close-range targets (up to around 15-20 meters) without needing to aim through the sights. The advantages of Point Fire shooting are that you can move much faster , your field of view is less restricted , and you don’t lose time raising the weapon and aiming through the sight. Mastering Point Fire is one of the key skills for winning engagements in EFT. Initially, it won’t be easy, because in the Point Fire position, you don’t have a crosshair like in other games, and the point of aim isn’t centered on your screen ; it’s wherever your weapon barrel is pointed when you shoot. This is influenced by your movement, and even when you’re stationary, it’s not perfectly aligned with the center of your screen and it will sway. Using laser sights can be a huge help, as they allow you to see where you’re aiming without raising your weapon. However, you won’t have access to these attachments at the beginning, so you’ll need to get used to aiming without them. Even though you won’t have access to them initially, it’s worth noting that attachments like laser sights, flashlights, and infrared illuminators can significantly reduce weapon spread and improve accuracy. Practice shooting without ADSing to get comfortable with this technique. It will take some time, but once you master it, the benefits are enormous , and defenitely worth the pain. Many players tend to freeze when they hear or see enemy movement, trying to determine the enemy’s location and movements, stopping to avoid making noise themselves. This can be the right behaviour if the enemy hasn’t noticed you, and may allow you to surprise them with an ambush. However, it's better to assume there is always the possibility that, as you heard or saw them, they might have already heard or seen you before you stopped moving. Experienced players can easily make you believe they haven’t noticed you, only to set up an ambush or target you while you think they’ve moved on. Staying still gives them the advantage , letting them take the initiative. They can surround and flank you, create distractions with other sounds like gunfire or grenade explosions, effectively trapping you and making you an easy prey . It’s better to move and keep the enemy uncertain of your exact position rather than remaining in a spot where they’ve already pinpointed you , giving them the initiative . In any case, never be passive. If you want to set an ambush, do it. But never freeze in a corner waiting for a sound. Make sure to always have a plan (and possibly also a plan B in case things go south). I AM NEW TO TARKOV! Welcome to Tarkov! If you're here, it's because you think you could use a bit of help . I totally get it—I've been in your shoes myself. Unfortunately, back then, The Tarkov Central wasn’t around , so I had to figure things out on my own! To give you a helping hand, I decided not to create just another guide. Instead, I’ve prepared something closer to a tutorial, designed to take new players through a gradual learning process. This approach allows you to start playing (almost) immediately and achieve solid results in the shortest time possible, armed with a basic understanding of Escape from Tarkov. You can then dive deeper through articles, deep dives, and guides available here on TTC . I'm not claiming this is the only or the best way to learn EFT , nor that I know everything about this complex game, but in my experience, I believe this tutorial offers a solid approach to get started without unneeded frustration. The tutorial follows the steps I took to learn EFT myself, refined and adapted with the knowledge I’ve gathered over time. I always try to double-check the information I provide. If you notice any errors or omissions, please let me know right away so I can make corrections as soon as possible. Important Note: This is the first iteration of the tutorial and guide I envisioned. I’ll continue refining it and adding new sections over time. Next: A Beginner Guide to EFT comments debug Comments Write a comment Write a comment Share Your Thoughts Be the first to write a comment.

Sometimes the situation will seem hopeless . You’ll find yourself injured and bleeding, maybe with a broken leg (or both), forced to limp along slowly while your character groans in pain, trying to reach the extraction point with blurred vision... But the magic of EFT is that, surprisingly often, you’ll survive even in the toughest situation s, dragging yourself to the extraction point with your last few health points, managing to make it out against all odds. Sometimes it almost feels like the game “knows”, and if you refuse to give up, it somehow gives you a fighting chance... or maybe it’s just a great life lesson! It’s also difficult not to give up on the game itself—EFT can be frustrating at times, but persistence pays off. I can assure you this. If you feel the frustration is too much, take a break, then get back when you feel rested. Haha! Gotcha. In Escape from Tarkov, there’s no map showing your position , active quests, or who’s around you. No waypoints or other aids—it’s as if you’ve been dropped into an entirely unknown place. Thankfully, dedicated EFT fans have created highly detailed 2D and 3D maps, which provide all the information you need . Some of these maps are even interactive , allowing you to zoom in and choose which elements to show or hide. With these maps, you can locate entry points, extraction points, mission objectives, loot areas, and even buried barrel caches and ground caches . There are various sources for these maps, but the best options, in my opinion, are those available on the EFT Wiki (the interactive ones are great, but I use a lot the 3D and 2D ones too, depending on what I need them for) and Map Genie (some maps require a subscription but they are excellent and always updated). Escape from Tarkov offers a unique experience with character movements. Through great animations, inertia and sound design, you can feel the weight of your character and weapon, while enjoying a wide range of movement options. To lean the basics about movement, study the Movement section on this EFT Wiki page: How to Play Guide for Escape from Tarkov Here are some tips about Movement: When you sprint you always reach the maximum speed, no matter how heavy you are. What changes is the time you need to reach the maximum speed and the amount of stamina consumed while sprinting. By default, the Q and E keys let you lean left and right, respectively but I strongly suggest changing them - check the Keybinds Guide i prepared to know how and why. Circle strafing: it's a technique that allows players to reduce the impact of inertia on strafing. In other games, when players are in combat they change strafing direction to dodge bullets. In EFT, instead of just pressing A and then D (or vice versa) to change the strafing direction, when in combat or when peeking an angle, it's advisable to press W or S before pressing the key to go in the opposite direction. So if I am strafing left with A and I want to go right to dodge bullets or to go back to cover behind an angle, instead of pressing D immediately, I press W or S and then D. This way the impact of inertia on my direction change is much lower. The two above tips can be combined to maximize the effect when peeking a corner. And in this other video another move is added, the quick lean tecnique - How to quick lean in Tarkov (peek like no generals) For a comprehensive overview of advanced movement techniques to maximize combat success in Escape From Tarkov, I recommend checking out an interesting and useful YouTube video by streamer DesmondPilak : The Ultimate Beginner Movement Guide for Escape From Tarkov . Being a year old, it includes an outdated section on right-peeking and left-peeking (as shoulder transitions hadn’t been implemented at the time), but it remains highly relevant and valuable. One of the most important thing shown is the freelook peek , when he runs past the door and uses freelook to look inside an spot potential enemies. UPDATE: I found another great video explaining advanced movements and providing additional tips by Tarkov Sherpa, streamer and content creator JonnyBooSock : Advanced Tarkov PVP Mechanics - Escape From Tarkov Guide . This video is also a bit old, so it contains one outdated piece of information in the section about "Building Momentum." It suggests running against a wall to gain momentum, but that's no longer possible. BSG patched this exploit—now, if you run against a wall, your character will stop. Note: It’s recommended to disable automatic vaulting in the game settings , as it increases resource consumption. It’s best to set it to a key you press only when you want to vault. For example, I’ve set it to the spacebar—holding it activates vaulting, while tapping it lets me jump. Check the Keybinds Guide for the full explanation on how to set it properly. Regarding Health, Healing, and Hitpoints, I recommend starting with the official video guide by BSG: Field Guide #2: Basics of medicine . Note: There is one thing missing in the Field Guide linked above. In a recent patch, the "Full Treatment" option has been added to the list you get when you hold the quickbar button your medkit is assigned to and you scroll the mouse wheel. This is now the faster option to heal multiple damaged parts of your body. Then, move on to the relevant section of the EFT Wiki: How to Play Guide for Escape from Tarkov . It’s also important to read the Health System Wiki page , where you’ll find details about body part-specific status effects, temporary status effects, and more. If you've already studied these topics, you'll understand that during a raid, you'll need the following medical items and provisions: Items to heal HP. Items to stop light bleeding. Items to stop heavy bleeding. Items to heal fractures. Items to perform surgeries on blacked-out (destroyed) limbs. Food & Drink items. To learn about all the healing items, check the dedicated EFT Wiki page: Medical . A Remedy for Multiple Conditions While reading the specs of medical items, you'll notice that some can address multiple conditions. For example, the Grizzly medical kit can heal HP, light bleeds, heavy bleeds, and fractures. However, you need to pay attention to the item's size and healing speed. For instance, treating a fracture with a Grizzly takes much longer than using an Immobilizing splint or an Aluminum splint . Additionally, the Grizzly is heavy and occupies four slots. Alternatively, bringing an AFAK , a CALOK-B , and an Aluminum splint lets you treat the same injuries (HP loss, heavy bleeds, and fractures) with three items occupying only one slot each and weighing less overall. Keep in mind that treating conditions like heavy bleeding, light bleeding, or fractures consumes a certain amount of "healing points" from medical kits. For instance, healing a heavy bleed that consumes 130 healing points isn’t a big deal with a Grizzly (which starts with 1800 points). However, using a Salewa first aid kit , which has only 400 points and requires 175 to stop heavy bleeding, means losing almost half of its capacity . In general, it’s better to carry dedicated items for specific injuries to conserve your med kits for healing HP and to save time. Destroyed (Blacked-Out) Limbs When you lose a leg, you’ll limp and won’t be able to run . Losing an arm will make it harder to keep your weapon stable while aiming, and it will take much more time to ADS . If your stomach is destroyed, your character will groan in pain , making it easy for enemies to locate you. Additionally, with a blacked out stomach, you will lose energy and hydratio n very fast. In short, it’s a critical condition that needs immediate attention. Carrying a surgical kit is essential. Painkillers and Pre-Med Painkillers are extremely useful items for quickly managing issues like fractures or blacked-out limbs. They are almost indispensable for raids. For instance, using painkillers allows you to sprint even if you have a fractured or blacked-out leg (although you’ll take slight damage to all other body parts with each step). If you get a fracture from an enemy’s bullet, you can use a painkiller, which will not only let you move normally but also keep you pain-free for a certain period (depending on the painkiller). This effect neutralizes any further fractures or sources of pain during its duration. Other important effects are that your character stops groaning (unless you sprint with a broken leg), and the screen blurring caused by the Pain effect disappears for the duration of the painkillers effect. An advanced technique worth learning early on is pre-medding : taking painkillers before or at the start of a fight to prevent potential issues from fractures or blacked-out limbs. Limping from a broken leg during a gunfight often means certain death due to extremely reduced mobility. By taking a painkiller “preemptively,” you can avoid this limitation entirely. For this reason, many players take painkillers before entering a hot zone where enemies are likely or right at the start of a fight to prepare for any eventuality. Some even stay under the constant effect of painkillers to be ready for anything at any moment. This is viable but expensive and also requires consuming food and water, as painkillers deplete hydration and energy faster. But if you think you heard something, never ignore it! Take note of it and either investigate or keep an eye on the area where the sound came from. Never think, “Hmm, I must’ve imagined it,” only to find out you were right all along and pay the price of your frivolity getting killed by a stealthy enemy. TIP: In the sound settings of Escape from Tarkov (EFT), lower the interface volume to 30 so that you can still hear it, but it doesn’t drown out other important in-game sounds. For example, when you’re refilling magazines during a raid, the sound of bullets being loaded is too loud and can mask crucial audio cues, such as an approaching player, a player ADSing, opening their inventory, or other subtle but crucial noises. Apart from the Scav kits that are good to learn without risking gear (or a fun diversive when you're more experienced and want to have some fun) Start by watching this video from Gigabeef: Tarkov Budget Kits: Cheap Early Loadouts & Efficient Gear! (Patch 0.15) . Although it references Patch 0.15, it’s still relevant today. The video is quite long, but I suggest watching just the first 20 minutes initially and returning to the rest once you’ve unlocked level 2 traders. In the video, Gigabeef provides excellent advice and suggests a solid starting loadout , explaining why certain choices are better than others. Here are a few considerations I’d like to add: Learn useful and cheap barters like the one for MF-UNTAR body armor , a level 3 armor (which is decent when you are starting to play) obtainable with 2 cans of MaxEnergy, which are fairly easy to find. The barters not only make buying some items cheaper (sometimes much cheaper), but allow you to buy gear that is otherwise unavailable to buy with money. There are so many barters it's difficult to know and memorize them all. Check the EFT Wiki to see if an item is obtainable through barter. At the early levels, I always carry 2 CAT tourniquets or 2 Esmarch tourniquets to stop heavy bleeding because it kills you very quickly. I spend a bit more, but I’ve often ended up using all of them in a single raid. Without them I would have used up all my med kit and died anyway. I often buy and carry at least 1 Immobilizing Splint because it’s cheap and applies very quickly. It saves me from having to use painkillers, as it permanently heals fractures. I completely agree with Gigabeef’s suggestion to use the Kalashnikov AKS-74UN 5.45x39 or the Kalashnikov AKS-74U 5.45x39 . These are easily modifiable to be able to add a red dot, a tactical foregrip, and even a flashlight with laser pointer (read the tip below). Compared to the mods you’ll have access to later, it’s not much—but for level 1, it’s a big deal. TIP: If I remember correctly, Gigabeef doesn’t mention that you can get a flashlight with a laser pointer from level 1 traders. The Glock GTL 21 tactical flashlight with laser is available from Mechanic LL1. Starting Gear (and Some Confusing Aspects) When starting EFT or after a wipe, you’ll find some starting gear in your stash. I recommend using your best equipment in Practice Mode to withstand a few hits during combat training with AIs. After that, switch to level 2 armor and a cheaper gun to test out more budget-friendly kits before jumping into online raids. The initial equipment also includes some confusing elements, particularly regarding weapons. USECs find in their stash the HK MP5 and the Colt M4A1 5.56x45 . Both come equipped only with iron sights, and adding at least a red dot makes a huge difference in their effectiveness on the field. However, to achieve this, you need to know how to do it . For the Colt M4A1 5.56x45 , you can simply remove the carry handle to reveal a mount rail where you can attach a red dot or scope. The issue lies with the large default gas block, which not only handles the gas but also blocks your line of sight unless you get a scope that sits higher than the block. The best solution is to complete the Gunsmith Part 1 quest as soon as possible (you will get this quest after completing the first quest from Mechanic, Saving the Mole ). This unlocks the AR-15 Windham Weaponry Rail Gas Block sale from Mechanic, which is much smaller and eliminates the sight-blocking problem. An intermediate workaround is shown in this video: Escape From Tarkov Lvl 1 M4A1 Build (.14 Patch) . As you can see from the title, it’s for an older patch, but it’s still valid. Since this last isn’t an optimal solution and the M4A1 is a very good gun for its very high rate of fire, you might want to do what I do: save your starting M4A1 for later , when you can change the gas block (and you are a bit more confident with combat and online raiding). In the meantime, buy and mod a Kalashnikov AKS-74UN 5.45x39 assault rifle or a Kalashnikov AKS-74U 5.45x39 assault rifle , as suggested in the Gigabeef’s video I linked above. You can buy them both from Prapor level 1 and you can easily mount a red dot on them. For the HK MP5 , mounting a red dot is much simpler . All you need is to buy the appropriate rail mount from Peacekeeper level 1. To find it easily, instead of manually searching through the trader’s inventory, use the Flea Market . Many players don’t realize that before level 15, you can’t trade with other players, but you can still purchase items sold by traders via the Flea Market. Just search for “MP5 MFI” and you’ll find the HK MP5 MFI HK universal low-profile scope mount . That’s what you need—attach it to your MP5, and you’ll be able to mount a red dot. BEARs find in their stash the PP-19-01 Vityaz and the Kalashnikov AK-74M 5.45x39 . Both of these are much easier to equip with a scope or red dot. All you need to do is replace the default dust cover with one that includes a mount rail: For the Vityaz, you’ll find the PP-19-01 Vityaz-SN dust cover at Prapor level 1. For the AK-74M, you can purchase the AK AKademia Bastion dust cover from Skier level 1. Or Not? One of the most hardcore aspects of Escape from Tarkov is the fact that when your character dies, everything in their inventory stays on their body and can be looted by other players or AI. It’s a sort of “soft permadeath,” because your PMC will retain their acquired level, completed quests, and all their skills and stats, but you’ll lose everything you took with you into the raid where you died. I believe this mechanic originates from games like the DayZ mod for Arma 2, one of the first online games to use this feature. The difference with DayZ is that EFT’s game scenarios are not persistent, so you cannot respawn and return to your body to recover what you lost. It's probably for this reason that in EFT, “if you die, you lose everything” but with two exceptions. Click on the links to read the articles I prepared about them: Secure Container Insurance Note: In a recent interview , Nikita explained that the true origin of the soft permadeath and the insurance system comes from EVE Online, which he was playing during the period when he first started thinking about and envisioning Escape from Tarkov. This way, you’ll learn the mechanics and also understand the differences and options you have. In the previous chapters, we discussed what you might need during a raid, but only experience and practice will help you figure out what you actually need, based on your playstyle and what you want to accomplish in each raid. Just remember that unexpected events are always around the corner . For example, you might decide not to bring food and water because you’re planning a short raid. However, if you’re forced to take a detour or wait because there are enemies nearby, your plans could change. Another tendency EFT has to completely alter your plans is making you find a rare or highly valuable item . A raid you planned to be quick and low-stakes—where you might have entered with minimal gear just to explore—can suddenly become a desperate fight for survival because you want to extract with that juicy loot. Bring Your Best Kit A common piece of advice for new players is to always enter raids with the best gear you have available (armor, weapons, and ammo). This maximizes your firepower and protection, giving you the best chances of surviving and successfully extracting. While the theory behind this advice is sound, I don’t think it’s always the best possible advice, especially for an inexperienced player. First of all, at the beginning, your resources are limited, so you need to save them. Second, at the start, survival isn’t determined so much by your gear as by your inexperience . In my opinion, it’s far more likely for a new player to die because of a mistake they make than because of a lack of gear like armor or weapons. Additionally, the higher the stakes, the greater the Gear Fear , which leads to more tension and nervousness. These emotions can cause hesitation due to the fear of being seen or heard, and in general, they increase the likelihood of making mistakes (If you want to learn tricks to reduce Gear Fear, tension, and nervousness, click on the link above). In my opinion, especially at the beginning, it’s better to find your own “comfort zone” based on what you have and can afford at any given time—something you’re willing to risk without too much fear of losing it. It’s also worth noting that even with the worst kit, it’s possible to take down enemies with far superior gear. That’s the beauty of Escape from Tarkov. So, "Bring your Best Kit"? Sure, but only once you have some experience, and even then, avoid falling into Gear Fear. Scav Kits I found out that a great way to accumulate experience in raid, gain knowledge and confidence, while also avoiding Gear Fear, is running Scav kits. They are free and easy to acquire : Have normal a Scav run trying to loot and survive. When you get back to your hideout, transfer the Scav kit to your PMC . Repair the weapon and armor. If it has no armor you can decide to buy a cheap one or go without. Add some consumabels in needed (healing, ammo, etc.). Hop in a raid. Same as point 1, but you do a Scav run specifically to retrieve the kit. Just enter a raid as a Scav and run to the nearest extract . Factory is the best map to do this because it's small with a lof of options for extract. Loot dead Scavs during your raids as a Scav or PMC. You clearly need to check for the weapon durability. If it's too low it doesn't make much sense to repair it. But even if it's bad it's still a free kit you're using to learn. Keep in mind that weapons can malfunction . Set the right keybinds for inspecting your weapon and fix it in case it happens by checking the article about Keybinds . It’s a good place to start finding items for building parts of your hideout. In order to know what to loot, you can set the Auto Add to Wishlist option to “Hideout zone upgrade items” in the “Gameplay” settings, which highlights (in blue) items you need for hideout upgrades (click this link to know more about the Wishlist feature ). Or, you can simply pick up whatever you find without getting too distracted. Early on in your journey, you’ll need a bit of everything . Initially, you’ll definitely need medical kits and items , ammo , food , and drinks , especially since traders with lower reputation levels offer limited selection and high prices. Over time, you’ll learn to recognize valuable loot and prioritize items that are essential, useful, or high in value. Once you become familiar with the game’s maps and start defeating enemies, you’ll realize there’s an abundance of loot —surely more than you can carry due to space and weight limits! It’s essential to know what to prioritize . Beyond items needed for tasks or the hideout, it’s crucial to identify items with the most utility and value. This will come with experience, but until then, there are several websites where you can check the value of items, even mid-raid: Tarkov Market Tarkov Guru Database for Tarkov There are also apps that display additional in-game information, like item values when you hover the mouse pointer on them, but it’s not 100% clear whether using them risks a ban, so I don’t feel comfortable promoting the use of these tools to you. A common rule many players follow is to fill their inventory with items worth more than 10,000 rubles per slot . For example, a single-slot item worth over 10,000 rubles or a four-slot item worth more than 40,000 rubles. Note: Patch 0.16 introduced a pretty big change by introducing the rule by which now to upgrade your hideout you need FIR (Found In Raid) items . Read the article I wrote about this for info, tips and a greatly useful video made by Pestily on where to find the loot you need! TIP: Some containers take up fewer slots than the number of slots they provide. For example, certain chest rigs occupy 9 slots but offer 16 internal slots. This means that by placing such a rig inside your backpack, you effectively gain 7 additional slots ! The only drawback is that the rig adds weight, which can slow you down or drain your stamina faster. However, this is a valuable trick to learn, especially early on when you're undergeared and usually carrying a lighter load. In these situations—and many others—you’ll learn just how crucial grenades are . Whether they’re explosive or simple flashbangs (a cheaper option), throwing a grenade will always provoke a reaction from the enemy, whether AI or another player, forcing them to move and reposition . If timed right, this reaction can give you the upper hand , even in seemingly hopeless situations. While grenades obviously have high destructive potential, experienced players often use them strategically to force opponents out of cover or make them take shelter, giving them a chance to reposition or launch an attack. The explosion of a grenade is also a great way to mask the sound of your footsteps, allowing you to move without the enemy knowing your direction. Watching gameplay videos from streamers and content creators will showcase these tactics clearly. From your very first raid, you’ll face the brutal (virtual) reality of Tarkov, which will relentlessly try to take you down. And it will. And you’ll risk losing all your gear and money before you even have the chance to gain more. That’s why I strongly suggest that you start by training in Practice Mode . Practice Mode allows you to run test raids where, even if you die, you won’t lose any of the gear you bring with you. Additionally, any ammunition, medical supplies, or other consumables you use will be restored once you exit the Practice Mode raid. In essence, once you leave the raid, your character resets to its pre-raid condition , as if nothing had happened. Similarly, any experience gained, missions completed, or loot gathered won’t be saved or recorded in Practice Mode. While this might seem like a waste of time, losing all your starting gear would cost you far more time to recover from the setback.
