It’s worth repeating: when in combat with AI never peek from the same cover twice in rapid succession, unless you’re desperate or seriously tempting fate! The AI remembers your position and is programmed to react faster each time you peek out to look or shoot. As mentioned, it may not shoot immediately the first time, but if you stay exposed too long or make the mistake of peeking again, your chances of survival are slim . This is a golden rule in EFT that every seasoned player will recommend (although even the experts sometimes slip up and get one-tapped as a result!). TIP : When in combat with other players re-peaking can be as much dangerous as with AI, but it’s easier for a player to not react fast enough if you peak just for an instant and it can be a way to bait them to shoot and waste ammo. And when they reload you can take the chance to attack and kill them. Next: Granada! comments debug Comments Write a comment Write a comment Share Your Thoughts Be the first to write a comment.

While doing this, you’ll also start picking up on other aspects of the game. If you’re lucky enough to have two monitors, keep the map open on the second screen. Alternatively, you can use a tablet or your smartphone (there are also dedicated apps), or simply keep the map open in the background and press ALT+TAB to switch from the game to the map whenever you need to consult it. In April 2024, Battlestate Games introduced a highly anticipated and requested feature for Escape from Tarkov: the PvE mode. While an unofficial mod created by EFT fans called Single Player Tarkov (or SPT) was already available, an official PvE mode had never been released before. PvE mode is included in the more expensive editions of EFT , specifically the controversial Unheard Edition and the older, highly regarded Edge of Darknes s (no longer available for purchase). For other editions, it is available as an expansion for $20 . The PvE mode allows players to play solo or in co-op mode with other players, using either their PMC or SCAV characters. Differences Between the Two Versions At the moment, the game is practically identical in both versions. PvE mode was introduced due to high demand from the community, without significant adaptations or changes compared to the PvP version, as the development team is focused on the final release of EFT in PvP mode. However, given the significant success of the PvE version, it's expected that it will be further developed in the future, with more adjustments to tailor EFT to the PvE experience. The main differences currently observed in PvE are: No Wipe: At the moment, PvE is the only mode in Escape from Tarkov that does not include "wipes", meaning the periodic reset of player profiles that erases all game progress except for achievements and a few other elements. While BSG has repeatedly mentioned the possibility that the final release of the game may include a no-wipe option for PvP as well, as long as the game remains in beta, there is no certainty that this will actually happen. Local Hosting = No Queues but Worse Performance When playing solo, you can choose to host raids on your machine instead of on BSG servers, resulting in shorter wait times to enter a raid. However, this also leads to worse performance . PvE raids hosted locally on your computer, are more demanding in terms of hardware requirement s to run smoothly because EFT was originally designed to use remote servers that handle part of the workload. Keep this in mind when deciding to play the PvE version locally. This applies to all maps except Streets of Tarkov , which is too performance-intensive to be hosted locally. In co-op mode, joining a PvE raid with a team, all raids are hosted on BSG servers . Note: At the moment, some of the lighter maps that are less demanding in terms of performance, such as Woods, are forced to be hosted locally and cannot be played on BSG servers. A little secret. One notable aspect of local hosting is that if you ALT+F4 during a raid, you’ll return to your hideout when you log back in, with no consequences —everything resets to how it was before the raid began. While this is a kind of cheat, it’s a convenient feature if things go south, you forget to bring something in raid, or life unexpectedly calls—be it your boss, spouse, children, or pets. Just do it before you die or it will be too late. 100% chance to get back insured gear when playing solo: If you play solo and die, the raid ends immediately, leaving no time for AI to loot your items. This guarantees that you will receive your insured gear back, with the only exceptions being cases where insurance is not intended to work or when a map is not hosted locally, such as Streets of Tarkov. However, in PvE co-op with other players, the raid is hosted on BSG servers and continues as long as other players are alive. This means that the AIs could theoretically loot your gear, and you would not receive it back through insurance if they survive until the end of the raid. In any case, without real players roaming the map, the chances of your gear being taken from your body are greatly reduced. Increased AI presence: To compensate for the absence of other player antagonists on the map, more Scavs spawn, and the number of AI PMCs encountered is higher than the number of PMCs (other players) typically encountered in PvP. This is also due to the fact that players often avoid confrontation, while AI PMCs usually attack on sight. Increased loot availability : Since there are no other players collecting loot, it’s much easier to find items scattered across the map, especially high-value ones. Both AI Scavs and PMCs do loot containers and dead bodies, but they seem to do it quite randomly, not selecting the most valuable areas as real players do in PvP. As for now, they surely not access locked rooms. Higher probability of encountering Bosses: Bosses seem to spawn with a higher probability, and since there are no other players to kill them, it’s easier to come across them. AI PMCs sometimes fight and manage to kill them, but this usually happens with solitary Bosses like Tagilla and Killa. It’s rare for AI PMCs to kill Bosses that have bodyguards. Difficulty completing quests requiring PMC kills in specific areas: Because AI typically roams only certain parts of the map, completing these quests can be challenging. Currently, it is often necessary to bait them into the correct areas. This mechanic is one that clearly needs improvement. No cheaters in raids: While there are still players who use exploits or cheats in PvE, their impact on others is limited to the in-game economy, as the Flea Market is the only point of interaction with other players. While there have been cases of duping and temporary prices fluctuations, in all honesty, I haven’t noticed any significantly negative effects. Why Play PvE? Although the true EFT experience —the toughest but also the most rewarding—is in the PvP version , PvE is still an excellent option, especially for players who are not yet veterans of EFT or have limited time to play. Local hosting for solo raids eliminates the need for matchmaking with other players and results in faster loading times , as everything is hosted directly on your machine. At the moment PvE is also the only EFT mode that doesn’t wipe , allowing players to get to the endgame at their own pace. Many PvP players started playing on PvE for this reason, after many wipes that caused them to lose everything and start from scratch the whole questline. In PvE, it is generally easier to earn money and find rare or useful items for upgrading the hideout. While AI enemies are capable of looting containers and dead bodies, they appear to do so in a fairly random manner, without prioritizing high-value loot areas. They also lack the ability to access locked rooms or areas that require keys, which further limits their impact on overall loot distribution. As a result, a large portion of valuable loot often remains untouched . In PvP, on the other hand, you are constantly competing with other players who tend to rush high-value areas, secure the best items as quickly as possible, and extract early to avoid unnecessary risks. Additionally, when playing solo with local hosting or on BSG servers, dying always results in the full return of insured gear , as solo raids end immediately and when not solo AI rarely has the opportunity to loot player equipment. This greatly reduces spending on weapons and loadouts , making it much easier to accumulate money over time. PvE as a tool to learn EFT and get to PvP PvE is still quite challenging, particularly for newcomers, but being significantly easier, it’s an excellent tool for learning EFT in preparation for PvP. The main reason is that battles against AI, while they may seem difficult at first, are much easier than those against other players (some of whom may have hundreds or even thousands of hours of gameplay experience). This allows players to learn at a lower difficulty level before stepping up to PvP once they're ready. PvE is great for learning combat because firefights are much more frequent . In PvP, many players adopt stealthy strategies and often avoid confronting others because they might be completing a quest or have found something valuable they want to bring home safely. It's quite common to play an entire raid and only kill a couple of Scavs, if anything. In PvE, however, AI enemies are much more easily encountered and are always aggressive. This provides much more combat practice (aim, shooting, recoil control, stress resistance, etc.), and while it is simplified because it's against AI, it’s still excellent training for beginners. Additionally, in PvE, it’s easier to explore maps because AI movements are more predictable, and their presence is usually limited to well-defined areas. This means the empty parts of the map allow for faster movement with less tension. Transitioning from PvE to PvP Once you’ve honed your skills, learned one or more maps, and achieved a high percentage of successful extractions in PvE, it might be time to transition to PvP to experience EFT in its most challenging yet rewarding version . However, keep in mind that in PvP, you’ll face real players, which means dealing with opponents who use much more complex and sophisticated strategies and tactics , taking advantage of all the possibilities the game offers. Examples include fast and unpredictable movements that AI enemies will never perform, unusual ambush spots, traps, using grenades to cover movements or avoid detection, and actions designed to disorient the opponent using game mechanics that AI cannot utilize. For these and other reasons, you’ll need to shed certain “bad habits” you might acquire while playing PvE, where it’s easier to rely on the predictability and limitations of AI. You must also be prepared for a greater level of frustration , which will be offset by an even bigger dose of dopamine and excitement when you successfully extract. My Thoughts I see a lot of people thinking or reacting as if you have to choose between playing either PvE or PvP. In reality, I play both and enjoy both . The emotions of PvP can't be replicated in PvE, but PvE is still fun, and I'm also using it as a way to improve in PvP. I explore maps more, get more combat opportunities, and complete more raids because I die far less often. And even if I do die, my gear always comes back with insurance. So less downtimes . Sure, AI enemies are repetitive and more predictable compared to PvP players, but you still have to hit your shots, move efficiently, react quickly, heal, reload, and perform all the actions you need in PvP. In short, it's good practice while also being good fun. Arena is great for practicing aim and pure combat. PvE can be a more well-rounded training experience. Notes This tutorial was designed for the PvP version of EFT but, with the necessary distinctions, also works for the PvE version. I’ve seen people asking whether playing in PvE mode has any downsides or negative effects on PvP mode. The two accounts are completely separate, and playing PvE does not affect PvP directly. The only drawback, as mentioned, is that you might develop bad habits due to the AI being easier and more predictable compared to real players. You’ll need to adapt your combat skills when transitioning to fights against real players. Not only is the catalog of usable weapons in the game massive, but each weapon can also be disassembled and modified in multiple parts to improve its stats and performance. For a guide on modding, you can start with BSG’s official guide . To delve deeper, I recommend following the excellent streamer and content creator Gigabeef , who loves focusing on the best builds and how to create them, as well as improving weapon builds he finds during raids in EFT. At the beginning, your options for both weapons and mods will be very limited . Additionally, since you’re unfamiliar with them, it will be challenging to loot the right mods during raids. However, over time, you’ll learn to recognize most of them. In the next chapter, Basic Loadout, we’ll explore the recommended choices for starting out. TIP: In order to be able to mod weapons using the "Modding" option or "Edit Build" from the menu you get when right-clicking a weapon while it's in your stash (not equipped on your character) you need to unlock the Workbench level 1 in your Hideout. This is something that you should try to achieve ASAP , since "modding" let you modify a weapon with the parts that you have in your stash, while "edit build" lets you also buy parts from the traders and Flea Market (once unlocked). If you don't have the Workbench you need to manually change mods by opening the inspect panel of a weapon, which is much more complicated and inconvenient. Unfortunately, there is no way to set a filter in the "edit build" interface to only show mods that are available from your stash or from traders. You will see all mods, even if you're not able to purchase them yet. Next: Basic Loadout comments debug Comments Write a comment Write a comment Share Your Thoughts Be the first to write a comment.

Knowing where you are and being able to reach the extraction points is just the first step in a long journey that will take a lot of time (and perhaps never truly end) to learn the maps like the back of your hand. The maps in EFT are incredibly detailed and meticulously designed to balance player movements and tactics . As you become more familiar with the game and start noticing more details, you'll realize, for example, that certain trees are positioned to limit the view of potential snipers, preventing them from gaining too much of an advantage. Some rocks provide cover, allowing safe movement across an area, but still leaving exposed spots where you can be hit. Floors are covered with different materials (for instance, broken glass, wooden planks, or metal surfaces that produce distinctive, louder sounds) so that moving carelessly over them will give away your position to enemies. Moreover, the maps are complex and intricately designed, allowing those with good knowledge to tactically outplay enemies . For example, on an urban map, knowing the buildings and their interior layouts can help you exit one side and re-enter from the opposite side to catch an enemy from behind. Or, by climbing stairs and peeking through a window, you can surprise them from an angle they won’t expect. All of this—and much more—makes map knowledge vital for surviving and defeating enemies. Keep it in mind as you explore and play. Next: The First Step: Practice Mode comments debug Comments Write a comment Write a comment Share Your Thoughts Be the first to write a comment.

Depending on where you spawn, you’ll have access to only certain extraction points, usually located on the opposite side of the map from your spawn point (with a few exceptions). Another thing to know is that there are extract points that can be used only by PMCs , others that can be used only by Player Scavs , and others that can be used by both indistinctly . It’s also worth noting that some extraction points have specific requirements to be used. Some may require a key to open an access door, others need a switch to be activated, some require money to pay for the extraction, and others may need a flare to signal extration. With patch 0.16 BSG introduced also Hidden Extracts , that can be used by both PMCs and Scavs, but to activate them you need to find a piece of paper with a code (learn more in this article ). Lastly, there are co-op extracts , that require the presence of both a PMC and a Scav to be activated. This means you need to find a peaceful member of the opposing faction that wants to collaborate and extract together. The reward for both is extra Fence Rep (or Scav Karma) and some presents from Fence (you'll receive them in your mail). So, how do you find all these extract points? In Escape from Tarkov, you can choose to play solo or as part of a team of 2 to 5 members. But which option is better? While it’s true that playing solo has undeniable disadvantages , such as the inability to cover all directions and angles from which enemies might attack and the inferior firepower, the freedom of movement and ability to move more quietly, combined with good map knowledge, effective combat tactics, and quality gear, can offset these drawbacks . Even in situations of being outnumbered, victory is still possible. Another advantage of playing solo is the ability to be more silent and stealthy, making it easier to avoid confrontations . You can hear enemies approaching more clearly, giving you the chance to hide and let them pass unnoticed. On the other hand, playing in a team is highly enjoyable for the teamplay aspect and offers significant advantages , such as covering each other's backs, controlling an area, and coordinating in combat. However, the lack of any indicators to distinguish teammates from enemies, difficulties in effectively communicating movements, and the inevitable noise and distraction caused by your teammates can introduce considerable challenges . It’s not uncommon to find yourself alone, surrounded by a well-organized and prepared enemy team, with no chance of survival. Similarly, a team can be ambushed by a single silent player who, exploiting a moment of distraction within the squad, the confusion caused by one teammate’s death, and the resulting breakdown in communication, manages to eliminate them all—or even causes some of them to accidentally kill each other in the chaos. Without a doubt, starting to play EFT solo is much harder than playing with others , especially if in the team you have more experienced teammates who already know the maps, quests, and tactics. They can teach you and help you avoid making mistakes. However, many argue that playing in a team can also be counterproductive , as relying on more experienced players might prevent you from truly learning the game the way you would by playing solo. My advice? Do both. Play in a team to stay safer and to learn from others . To reduce chaos caused by poor communication and the resulting teamkillings, along with excessive noise and difficulties to track enemies, limit your group size to a duo or, at most, a trio. Then, try playing solo to develop self-reliance and to play with your preferred style and at your own pace , allowing you to explore and learn the maps thoroughly. In any case, it’s important to know that both solo and team play come with their own advantages and disadvantages, making both options well-balanced and equally viable . TIP : to find a team to play with you can join the official EFT Discord , some streamer's Discord channels or you can also check other resources such as the subreddit r/EFT_LFG . When you start playing Escape from Tarkov, or after a wipe, every player faces what seems like a difficult choice: should I play as a BEAR or a USEC ? Personally, I’ve almost always chosen USEC and I only played as a BEAR once for two reasons: Curiosity. Starting weapons. BEARs begin with Russian firearms, which makes it easier to find compatible ammunition and weapon mods early on. However, in practice, the weapon choice didn't make much of a difference. The starting gear has minimal impact, especially since USECs can simply buy and use Russian weapons anyway, as many common ones are available from early levels. A Major Difference: Rogue AI Faction Behavior One big difference between BEAR and USEC at the moment is that the Rogue AI faction is aggressive towards BEARs but remains neutral towards USECs unless provoked . This has a significant impact when playing on Lighthouse (currently the only map where players can encounter Rogues), especially when completing quests there. USECs are not shot on sight by Rogues. They can enter the Water Treatment Plant (WTP) without being attacked, as long as they don’t get too close to the Rogues or fire at them. However, if a USEC shoots at a Rogue, all Rogues will become hostile towards them for the next three raids (these can take place on any map, not just Lighthouse). BEARs are shot on sight by Rogues—and from extreme distances with pinpoint accuracy (it is likely a bug and should be fixed by BSG). This means that, before being able to enter the Water Treatment Plant, BEARs must clear out all Rogues , who often have aimbot-level precision and become even deadlier when using the mounted guns on the three WTP buildings. BSG has long mentioned the possibility of adding a faction (RUAF?) that would be neutral or friendly to BEARs and hostile to USECs, but so far, this has not been implemented. As a result, only BEARs currently suffer the disadvantage of having an AI faction that is exclusively hostile to them. Post-Release Considerations (EFT 1.0) With the release of Escape from Tarkov 1.0, the situation surrounding faction choice remains largely unchanged . Rogue behavior on Lighthouse has not yet been fundamentally reworked, and BEAR players are still automatically targeted, often from very long distances . While some tweaks and adjustments to AI behavior have been made over time, the core issue persists and continues to make Lighthouse significantly more punishing for BEARs compared to USECs. No new AI factions have been introduced that favor BEARs or meaningfully counterbalance this disadvantage, with new Black Division faction (the AIs present in the final PvE-only map, Terminal) hostile to both sides equally . As a result the BEAR versus USEC choice remains slightly unbalanced in practice, with USEC retaining a situational advantage tied specifically to Lighthouse and Rogues interactions. Which One Should You Choose? For this reason, at least for now, choosing USEC is recommended if you want to take advantage of this mechanic. However, keep in mind that many players still choose BEAR and manage to progress—even if it’s more difficult. If you want more information about the differences between BEAR and USEC before making your choice, I recommend this excellent video by Gigabeef, known for his thorough and informative content: Should You Choose BEAR or USEC In Escape From Tarkov? Remember that it’s not only walking, running or firing your weapons that make noise. In EFT, sounds like accessing your inventory, switching fire modes, raising your weapon to ADS (another reason why being skilled at hip fire is essential), checking your magazine, preparing a grenade, healing, eating, or drinking can be heard from a considerable distance. Also, be mindful of other sounds your character may produce, like heavy breathing after running or groans of pain if injured. So, if you’ve decided that staying silent and still is the best strategy, remain as motionless as possible. TIP: if you need to rotate your character to watch around you or understand better where sounds are coming from, remember 2 things: You can use the freelook function to rotate only your head, which doesn't make any sound If you really need to rotate your whole character, never do it standing still because when your feet skip on the ground to perform the rotation they will generate a very audible sound of friction with the ground. It's better if at the same time you move slightly your character at minimum speed with WASD while rotating (this works better if you're also crouching). Your steps will still make a bit of noise, but sensibly less. Next: Fighting the AI comments debug Comments Write a comment Write a comment Share Your Thoughts Be the first to write a comment.

You can check the complete list on the EFT Wiki page about Loot . Certain containers or rooms contain only specific types of loot. For example, a “med bag” will have only medical items or materials for crafting medical supplies . Other containers can hold a wide variety of loot. This includes sports bags , jackets , and hidden cashes , which may contain a broader range of items, including rare and valuable ones. Often, logic can guide you to the loot you need. Pharmacies in Streets of Tarkov have medicines, restaurants stock food and drinks, as do supermarkets. Other times, experience or external maps can help you locate loot. Medicines in Streets of Tarkov, for example, are not only found in pharmacies but also in certain rooms of buildings, inside med bags, or placed on furniture or floors. Knowing loot locations is crucial , whether for finding quest items, upgrading your hideout, or dealing with emergencies during a raid. For example, if you didn’t bring food and your energy is depleting, knowing where to find it quickly can be a lifesaver . Similarly, if you’re injured and out of medkits, knowing where to find medical supplies could mean the difference between life and death. Note: Patch 0.16 introduced a pretty big change by introducing the rule by which now to upgrade your hideout you need FIR (Found In Raid) items . So choose your actions carefully. If you spot an enemy, consider whether it’s truly worth engaging—are you in a position of advantage, and are you ready? If you’re not well-positioned, if the enemy isn’t alone, or if you’re already injured or low on ammo, avoiding or escaping from a fight is never a bad choice . As I’ve said, honour matters little in Escape from Tarkov. What counts is survival and making it out alive . Surviving means you get to keep the loot you’ve collected and the gear you have equipped, earn more experience points, and complete missions that require you to survive the raid. Dying can mean losing everything you’re carrying, as well as the time spent completing a mission and everything you’ve done in that raid. Of course, if you’ve completed a mission that doesn’t require you to survive, and you don’t have valuable loot or irreplaceable gear, you might decide to go full Rambo and dive into some PvP action—for the thrill, the fun and practice. This way, when you engage in PvP, you'll already be accustomed to it. Otherwise, you risk developing "bad habits" by relying on the predictability of AI, only to become an easy target in raids against real players. Another critical element is keeping a cool head . EFT constantly keeps you on edge , as danger can strike from unexpected angles at any moment. During fights, the pressure can be intense. If you panic , you're likely to make fatal mistakes , lose control, and miss the crucial actions needed to survive. Staying calm under pressure isn't something innate—it’s a skill you can develop with practice. As mentioned earlier, Tagged and Cursed mode is an excellent way to build this resilience. Another method is simply raiding frequently , exposing yourself to high-pressure situations, and learning to manage anxiety and fear. Over time, you'll improve your ability to stay composed, avoid losing your temper, and reduce mistakes under stress . In either case, you’ll need to approach and loot them. First, remember that looting bodies is optional . Only loot if it’s relatively safe (for example, avoid looting bodies in open fields where you’re exposed to multiple lines of sight), and only after checking that there are no other enemies nearby. You can never be completely sure there are no threats around, so if it feels too risky, it’s better to move on . It’s far better to miss out on loot than to die and lose everything you already have. There’s also the infamous “YOLO Technique ”, where you rush to loot without checking anything, grab what you can as quickly as possible, and run. Sometimes it works out, but don’t complain if it doesn’t, and you end up with a hole in your head! If you decide to loot a body, be quick and avoid wasting time arranging items perfectly in your bag. Take the essentials and leave the rest if you’re out of space or becoming too heavy. Greed can be deadlier than a squad of angry Tagillas. Always remember that danger could be just around the corner and that the sound of gunfire will likely attract other AI or players who will ambush you if you relax too much after eliminating an enemy. Use hotkeys to quickly transfer items to your inventory instead of dragging each item manually, which wastes valuable time. CTRL + Left Click moves an item from an external container to your inventory. ALT + Left Click equips a weapon or wearable item (rig, backpack, helmet, etc.) if the slot is available. DELETE discards an item, dropping it on the ground (read the Keybinds Guide for tips on rebinding this command to a more accessible key, as you'll use it a lot and timing is critical). IMPORTANT: When auto-moving items to your inventory using CTRL + Left Click, be mindful of where they end up. Some items go directly into your backpack, while others—such as ammo, grenades, and magazines—go into your rig. Remember to always leave at least enough space for the magazine in your weapon , or you will drop it when reloading (take into account your side arm magazine too if you have one equipped, and if you have extra mags for it with you). Escape from Tarkov is a hardcore and realistic online first-person mil-sim extraction shooter with action RPG and MMO features, developed by the Russian studio Battlestate Games (BSG) . Set in the fictional Norvinsk region on the border between Russia and Europe, the game immerses players in an area devastated by conflict between two private military companies (PMCs): United Security (USEC) and the Battle Encounter Assault Regiment (BEAR). The Lore The lore behind EFT is not fully disclosed , as the game, still in beta, does not yet allow players to access quests related to the main storyline. What we know so far is that the Norvinsk region has been isolated by a military blockade to prevent the conflict between the factions from spreading to other regions, or possibly to the entire world. The conflict involves two key groups: USEC , hired by the mysterious company Terra Group , which is conducting dubious experiments and research possibly linked to biological and nuclear warfare, and BEAR , a paramilitary organization hired by the Russian government to investigate and halt Terra Group's activities. Adding to the chaos, an EMP explosion , referred to as "The Blue Fire " by the locals and worshipped by a mysterious faction known as the Cultists, devastated the region. While the exact origins of the explosion remain unclear, many suspect it to be the result of secretive and advanced experimental technologies tied to Terra Group's shadowy operations. The EMP rendered most electrical and electronic devices inoperable, plunging the region into further isolation and disorder. This dire situation has caused part of the local population to turn into scavengers, known as Scavs , who roam the area in search of food, resources, and weapons, often resorting to violence to survive. Alongside the Scavs are the USEC and BEAR PMCs (private military contractors) who have become trapped in Norvinsk. With no external support and abandoned by their respective organizations, they are no longer following their original orders and are now focused solely on surviving . Consequently, in addition to scavenging for resources and equipment abandoned throughout the Norvinsk region, they have also started to accept quests and tasks from local dealers . These dealers seem to have access to vital resources and equipment necessary for survival, though their methods of obtaining these supplies remain mysterious. For (much) more info about the lore of Tarkov you can check EUL Gaming YouTube channel . The Gameplay Players participate in "raids," where they navigate expansive maps to scavenge for valuable loot, engage in combat with other players and AI-controlled enemies, complete quests , and strive to reach extraction points to escape to their hideout or transit to other zones. EFT emphasizes realism through detailed weapon customization, complex health management systems, and realistic ballistics. A distinctive feature is the high-stakes nature of gameplay : if a player dies during a raid, they lose all the equipment and items they brought in or collected, unless they have insured their gear and it remains unclaimed by others. EFT also features an RPG-like skill system , allowing for character progression. Unlike many games, there are no skill points to assign. The skills progress organically by performing actions related to them (e.g., you increase your Strength skill by running while overweight). Beyond raids, players can enhance their "Hideout", an underground shelter that provides various in-game benefits and crafting opportunities. The game also offers a dynamic economy , allowing players to trade with NPC merchants and other players through a Flea Market. Quests from traders provide objectives that, when completed, increase trader loyalty and unlock new items and crafting recipes. Escape from Tarkov is renowned for its steep learning curve and intense, immersive gameplay, appealing to players seeking a challenging and realistic shooter experience. The challenge that EFT poses for players is intentional, and it’s what makes the game frustrating on one hand, but extremely satisfying and capable of delivering emotions that other games simply can't offer to those who, after studying its features and mechanics and improving their combat and survival skills, manage to succeed in their raids . Release Date After more than a decade in closed beta, Escape from Tarkov has finally reached a historic milestone: its official release on November 15, 2025 . For years, many believed this moment would never come, convinced that Battlestate Games would abandon the project before crossing the finish line. Instead, Nikita Buyanov and the entire BSG team proved otherwise , showing unwavering belief in their vision and carrying it through to release. And this is far from the end: with a commitment to at least ten more years of development and new content , the journey is only just beginning. Strap in. To get comfortable with combat, I suggest starting on the Factory map in Practice Mode . It’s small, and you’ll encounter enemies quickly. Plus, it loads quickly, so if you die or run out of ammo, you can reset and start again in no time. However, combat on Factory is often close-quarters and intense, so after a while, it’s a good idea to also practice on Ground Zero, Customs, or Woods. These maps offer combat at more varied distances , with opportunities for tactical positioning and movement . Note: Weapon modding is a major aspect of Escape from Tarkov, but if you're starting from scratch as a level 1 PMC with level 1 traders, your options are quite limited. Traders offer very few weapons and attachments, and your ammo selection is similarly restricted. On top of that, you won’t have access to the Flea Market. Because of these limitations, I won’t delve into weapon modding just yet. We’ll explore this topic later, but if you’re curious about what’s available with level 1 traders and no Flea Market, check out this video by Gigabeef: The Best Level 1 Weapons & Ammo In Tarkov Patch 0.16! This is likely because they’re somewhat experienced in the game, know where to find these items on the maps, and have a fast-paced playstyle that leads them to extract early, so they don’t easily run out of energy or hydration. However, running out of energy and hydration during a raid is a serious problem and can lead to death because you start taking constant damage from dehydration and fatigue, plus other side effects . Personally, I follow the school of thought that considers always bringing food and water into raids a smart decision for the following reasons: There are already enough dangers and things trying to kill me during raids. I prefer not to have to worry about finding something to eat or drink because I’m about to die of hunger or thirst. It’s not a big deal to carry them. If I need space, I can either consume what I brought and free up that space or, if I don’t have time, discard the food and water. Having your stomach blacked out (destroyed) is quite easy, especially if you’re not wearing good armor that covers it. As stated in the EFT Wiki Health system page , when this happens, it causes significant dehydration and energy loss. Even if you heal it quickly with a surgical kit, you might still find yourself in a difficult situation, especially in the second half of a raid when your hydration and energy levels may already be low. Lastly, some argue that there’s no need to bring food and drinks into raids when you’ve maxed out the Metabolism skill (Elite level), as you won’t take damage when reaching zero hydration and energy. However, even at the Elite level of Metabolism, stamina regeneration is still severely affected by low energy and hydration levels. This isn’t a consequence-free condition. Being unable to run for long because your stamina depletes quickly results in poor mobility during combat. Additionally, if the raid timer is running out, you might not make it to the extraction point in time. You’ll also have many actions to perform during a raid , such as navigating, spotting enemies, making tactical choices, healing, eating, drinking, looting, reloading, filling your mags and—most importantly—surviving. You need to become familiar with every aspect of the game and each action it entails. Experience will help you learn the routines that allow you to focus on the essentials . EFT isn’t a game that offers instant gratification—in fact, you’ll likely experience more frustration at first. It’s a game that requires patience and dedication, but in return, it delivers some of the most intense emotions and satisfaction that a game can offer. Your first goal is to learn how to enter a raid and extract without getting killed , using one of the designated extraction points within the time limit. If you get killed or run out of time, you’ll lose everything . But if you survive, you’ll get a well deserved dopamine hit and enjoy the rewards of your loot! Consider a situation where you’re waiting behind a corner after hearing an enemy nearby. Unfortunately, the enemy may have also heard or seen you and knows your position. If they decide to peek out and shoot, they’ll have a double advantage because: You’ll have a reaction delay before you start shooting. Since it’s an online game, even with a great connection, there’s always a slight delay between pressing the trigger and the game servers registering and processing your action. You may experience other kind of lags (e.g. input lag). That’s why it’s crucial to understand how to act in each situation. Never assume that an enemy you’ve spotted hasn’t spotted you in return. Always assess carefully before deciding whether to stay still or take action. If you’re unsure, take action. Besides what you’ll find on the bodies of enemies you’ve defeated, each map has scattered loot that you’ll find on the ground, placed on furniture and surfaces, and inside containers you’ll need to open to access. Initially, you may not find much loot around. This is because, in addition to not always being easy to spot (especially if you don’t know what it looks like), loot doesn’t appear everywhere . At the start of each raid, EFT determines what loot is present on the map and where. You’ll need to learn which rooms and locations tend to have loot more frequently. While the potential loot spots are consistent, the presence of loot, the types of containers, their positions, and their contents vary from raid to raid . To get this knowledge, other than experience, you can watch EFT streamers play or the loot guides or map guides they often make, where you can see their loot runs, what they prioritize, etc. I also highly suggest to take a look and study the interactive maps you can find on the EFT wiki . Note: Patch 0.16 introduced a pretty big change by introducing the rule by which now to upgrade your hideout you need FIR (Found In Raid) items . It's quite common to start an action like healing or eating and suddenly hear enemy footsteps approaching—or even worse, to find yourself under enemy fire. Healing, Food, and Drinks For healing, food, and drinks, you can simply press the right mouse button , and the action will be interrupted. However, you’ll have to wait for your character to stop the action and put away the item they were using. Some actions stop faster than others , while some take longer to cancel. The action that takes the longest to interrupt is surgery using a surgical kit. Since this action gives you a significant advantage by allowing you to restore a blacked-out limb, it also comes with major limitations. Not only does it force you to remain stationary , but it also requires more time to be interrupted. Losing the Item in Use or some of its Charges For healing items and drinks with multiple charges, interrupting the action has no downsides . The action will stop at whatever point you reached, leaving the effects of the usage intact. For example, if you are healing a missing 50 HP in your torso and you interrupt at 25 HP, the action will stop, you’ll have healed only 25 HP, and the medkit will have 25 HP worth of charge deducted. The same applies to drinking. If you’re drinking from a water bottle with 60 charges and you stop at 30, your thirst will be reduced accordingly, and 30 charges will be used up from the bottle. However, for certain items, you can lose the item itself or one of its charges and get no effect . For example, let’s consider a food can with a single charge. If you interrupt the eating action immediately, your character will simply close the can and put it away—you won’t lose it. If you interrupt later, your character will still put it away, but the item will be lost entirely, with no effect on your hunger. This applies to single-use food and drink items, as well as surgical kits. TIP: If you try to perform two actions that can’t be done simultaneously, the second one will interrupt the first. If you were using an item with a charge, you will lose that charge without gaining its benefit. For example, if you interrupt surgery by trying to fill a magazine with ammo, you will lose a charge from the surgical kit without completing the surgery. Using Animation Interruption to Speed Up Healing Interrupting animations isn’t just useful for reacting to emergencies—it can also be strategically used to speed up healing . When using a medkit, only the first part of the animation is actually needed to restore HP . The second part of the animation is only required when the medkit is being used to remove additional effects like bleeding or fractures. This means that if you only need to restore HP, you can interrupt the healing action early as soon as you see the medkit’s charge number decrease—this indicates that the healing has already been applied. By mastering this technique, you can save precious seconds , allowing you to heal efficiently without being locked into a full animation unnecessarily. If you need to heal multiple body parts, this can save you even more time, as you’ll shave off seconds from each heal. If you want to know more about this, see it in action as well as a comparison to the recently introduced continuous healing mechanic to see which technique is the most effective, I suggest you to watch this video by Gigabeef . Special Case: Individually-Loaded Weapons In Escape from Tarkov, you may find yourself using weapons that don’t have removable magazines and must be reloaded one bullet at a time . This is the case with many shotguns, as well as rifles like the SKS and Mosin. When you press R to reload one of these weapons, your character will start loading rounds one by one until the internal magazine is full. This process takes several seconds, but what happens if an enemy suddenly appears while you’re in the middle of reloading? Or if you're in the middle of combat and only want to reload 2-3 rounds so you can start shooting again as soon as possible? If you need to interrupt the reload, instead of pressing the right mouse button like you do to interrupt other actions, press the left mouse button , as if you were about to fire. Even in this case, the action won’t stop instantly —you’ll likely load one more bullet before stopping (depending on the exact moment you press the left mouse button)—but then you'll be ready to shoot. For safety, you can also press the left mouse button multiple times, but be careful not to keep clicking for too long, or you might accidentally fire a shot when the reload animation stops. Practice! Since interrupting actions usually happens in high-stress situations, it's best to be familiar with how it works in advance . Knowing the timing required can make a big difference. I strongly recommend practicing in Practice Mode, so you don’t risk losing charges or items unnecessarily. This is especially true for interrupting individually-loaded weapon reloads, which can sometimes be a bit tricky to get right and can determine the outcome of a fight.
