You won’t be able to complete missions permanently, but at least you’ll see where to go and what to do before tackling them with enemies trying to kill you. Escape from Tarkov’s hardcore nature is reflected in its missions, which usually provide minimal information in the briefing about what you need to do and, especially, where to go. Ideally, you’d spend time searching and experimenting to stay true to the game’s spirit, but honestly, it would be tough to figure everything out on your own (especially if you're inexperienced). So, look up the missions on the EFT Wiki (this page is a list of all quests, but you can search them by name using the search feature), where you’ll find instructions on what to do, what items you’ll need, maps showing the objective location, and all the other information you need to complete the mission. For example, here you can see details on Prapor’s first mission: Shooting Cans . For more complex missions that you struggle with, it’s a good idea to watch explanatory videos on YouTube as well. They often contain tips and tricks that can be very helpful. Next: The Right Gear comments debug Comments Write a comment Write a comment Share Your Thoughts Be the first to write a comment.

It's important to know them in order to be aware of the dangers you're going to face. There are 2 main categories: players and AIs. Players can be PMCs or Scav players. AIs can be Scavs, Scav Raiders, Rouges, Cultists, Bosses and their Guards. Players Every player can join a raid as a PMC or a Scav player. PMCs: It's the players' main character. It has the standard health pool (Head 35hp/Thorax 85p/Stomach 70hp/Arms 60hp each/Legs 65hp each for a total of 440hp). It's the most dangerous threat you will encounter as the PMC can be equipped with the best gear of the game and players employ the biggest array of combat techniques and tricks to defeat you. Scav players: Players that join the raid as Scavs. They spawn with randomized free gear , but it's usually quite poor, in bad conditions and with poor ammo. They also spawn with randomized loot already in their inventory, which can range from nothing, to useless stuff, to extremely valuable items. Usually players use Scavs to scavenge for loot and being under-geared they tend to avoid combat. However, if engaged in combat, Scav players can be dangerous because if they didn't loot anything valuable they have nothing to lose , their gear being given to them for free. Usually Scav players also worry about Scav Karma , thus try to avoid killing other Scavs. For this reason they are at a disadvantage compared to PMC because they need to identify their potential target before shooting and will hesitate before opening fire. Scav players usually join raids much later than PMC, but this depends on the map chosen and other factors that vary with time. For example in Streets of Tarkov they usually join raids with more than 30 mins left of time. Read more about Scav players on the EFT Wiki . AIs Scavs: They are the most commonly encountered and easiest kind of AI present in the game. Their combat capabilities are usually limited and they have the worst gear. Nonetheless, they can be very dangerous and sometimes the RNG aspect of EFT let them land deadly (head)shots. They usually roam specific areas, but they can be attracted by gunshots and can catch players unprepared if they station in an area for too long after a fight for looting or healing/repacking mags/etc. Scavs can also be Snipers positioned on higher grounds such as on top of buildings, terraces, towers and are armed with sniper rifles. They usually miss the first few shots and give you the time to get to cover and shoot them from there. But don't make the mistake to underestimate them. If they chose you as a target and you don't break line of sight they can be very dangerous. Read more about Scavs on the EFT Wiki . Scavs Raiders: They are part of the Scavs faction, but they are a more powerful version of Scavs , they have more hp, much better geared and more dangerous. They have a bigger health pool and are usually armored. They can spawn only in The Lab and in the Reserve maps. Note: If you kill them as a Scav player, you won't lose Scav Karma (but the other Scav Raiders will attack you). Read more about Scav Raiders on the EFT Wiki Rogues: Rogues are a faction of ex-USEC operatives in Escape from Tarkov. They are led and commanded by the Goons (a group of 3 bosses that roam some maps together). They can be found only on the Lighthouse map. They are dangerous, well geared and armored and have more hp than the normal PMC. They can be a good source of decent ammo and gear , especially early in the wipe. They have different behaviours against Scavs, Bear PMCs and USEC PMCs. To know more about this and more details about them, visit the Rouges page on the EFT Wiki . Cultists: Cultists are a faction that appear only at night (between 22:00 and 7:00) and only in some locations. They are very dangerous because their footsteps make no noise and they are usualy very aggressive. Also, their blood is cold so they are almost invisible to thermal vision devices. Fighting them is similar to a boss encounter as they usually spawn as a group, with a Priest Cultist (which is considered a Boss) and 2 to 4 Warrior Cultits as his bodyguards. Also, they are difficult to find as bosses, as they have a low chance of spawn. To learn more, visit the Cultists page on the EFT Wiki . Bosses Bosses are the most powerful AIs in Escape from Tarkov. They have a low chance to spawn on selected maps and they have each very different stats and abilities. Some are more easy to defeat but all of them pose a serious threat as they usually have a very large health pool associated with a lot of firepower and great aggressiveness. To learn about each of them, their location, behaviour and strategies to eliminate them, visit the Bosses page on the EFT Wiki . Don’t get discouraged. We’ve all been there—it’s just a matter of practice and getting used to it. Try to move quietly and stay in cover , leaning out to check if the area is clear before advancing. If you spot an enemy, try to take them out before they notice you. When exposing yourself in the open to check for enemies or investigate a noise, never stand still. Keep moving—side to side or circle-strafing —to make yourself a harder target. This is especially effective against snipers, whether AI or players. Avoid running unless it’s necessary (e.g. you have to cross an open area with no cover) or you’re sure no one is nearby. Even in Practice Mode, where there are no real players, AI can still be dangerous, and sometimes they can shoot with deadly accuracy if they detect you. Also, remember that when you run, you can’t shoot , as your weapon is lowered. In some situations, however, running is essential—like when you’re crossing open ground under enemy fire. The faster you move, the harder it will be for enemies (even AI) to hit you. If you suddenly come under fire, remember the right reaction: run for cover . Never stop to turn around and figure out who’s shooting or where they are. Standing still out in the open is the fastest way to get killed. Knowing how to take down AI fast and efficiently is vital because it allows you to focus on the greater threat —other players. Starting with the AI set to “easy” should make combat manageable, but as you increase the difficulty, the challenge will grow. Learn how AI moves and fights . Notice their voice lines . They usually shout before shooting at you. And usually the first couple of shot are not accurate, more like a warning shot (but sometimes they are deadly, it's RNG). The most important voice lines to learn to recognize are those they say before throwing a grenade . AI voice lines are useful also to understand if you're facing a Boss and his guards instead of normal Scavs. In this case too, throwing granades is a good way to force them to talk and understand which and how many AIs you're facing. By moving carefully and listening, you can avoid being detected by AI and spot them first , giving you a chance to aim and target their heads, which often results in a one-tap kill unless they’re wearing heavy-duty helmets. Even better, aim for exposed areas like the face, ears, or neck. Legs are also a good target, as they lack armor, and damaging them will slow the enemy’s movement, causing them to limp . This technique is especially effective against well-equipped enemies with strong armor and helmets. Also, keep in mind that after a limb gets blacked, if it continues to take damage, a part of that damage will be transferred to the remaining parts of the body (collateral damage). So it's possible to kill your target by continuing to hit the same limb. Be aware that when you aim at an AI, even from behind, they may react as if they sense you’re targeting them. This “sixth sense” feature prevents stealth players from easily taking them out. Usually, you’ll have a brief window to land a headshot before they start moving and react. If your first shot doesn’t kill them, take a few more if possible, but don’t stand still and don't stay exposed for long —move behind cover quickly. Then, peek out to shoot again. If you still haven’t finished them off, avoid peeking from the same spot immediately again . AI remembers your position and will be ready to shoot the moment you’re visible again (this is true for player encounters as well, but AI has an even quicker reaction time). Another important point to keep in mind—one that many in the EFT community agree on—is that AI seems to have a kind of timer that affects their accuracy and lethality. The longer a fight lasts, the more dangerous they become. This is yet another reason why holding the same angle is a mistake. Keep moving, rotate around the AI (flanking or rotation ), and try to find another angle to engage from. The faster and more unpredictably you move, the harder it will be for them to hit you (This also serves as excellent training for PvP, as the same principles apply when fighting other players). If you’re pinned and can’t move, wait for the AI to reposition and look for an opportunity to surprise them. Here’s a trick that often works: if you’re stuck, wait a few seconds to let the AI “lose focus” on your position. Once they’re “distracted,” you’ll have another chance to shoot or reposition. Escape from Tarkov is a hardcore and realistic online first-person mil-sim extraction shooter with action RPG and MMO features, developed by the Russian studio Battlestate Games (BSG) . Set in the fictional Norvinsk region on the border between Russia and Europe, the game immerses players in an area devastated by conflict between two private military companies (PMCs): United Security (USEC) and the Battle Encounter Assault Regiment (BEAR). The Lore The lore behind EFT is not fully disclosed , as the game, still in beta, does not yet allow players to access quests related to the main storyline. What we know so far is that the Norvinsk region has been isolated by a military blockade to prevent the conflict between the factions from spreading to other regions, or possibly to the entire world. The conflict involves two key groups: USEC , hired by the mysterious company Terra Group , which is conducting dubious experiments and research possibly linked to biological and nuclear warfare, and BEAR , a paramilitary organization hired by the Russian government to investigate and halt Terra Group's activities. Adding to the chaos, an EMP explosion , referred to as "The Blue Fire " by the locals and worshipped by a mysterious faction known as the Cultists, devastated the region. While the exact origins of the explosion remain unclear, many suspect it to be the result of secretive and advanced experimental technologies tied to Terra Group's shadowy operations. The EMP rendered most electrical and electronic devices inoperable, plunging the region into further isolation and disorder. This dire situation has caused part of the local population to turn into scavengers, known as Scavs , who roam the area in search of food, resources, and weapons, often resorting to violence to survive. Alongside the Scavs are the USEC and BEAR PMCs (private military contractors) who have become trapped in Norvinsk. With no external support and abandoned by their respective organizations, they are no longer following their original orders and are now focused solely on surviving . Consequently, in addition to scavenging for resources and equipment abandoned throughout the Norvinsk region, they have also started to accept quests and tasks from local dealers . These dealers seem to have access to vital resources and equipment necessary for survival, though their methods of obtaining these supplies remain mysterious. For (much) more info about the lore of Tarkov you can check EUL Gaming YouTube channel . The Gameplay Players participate in "raids," where they navigate expansive maps to scavenge for valuable loot, engage in combat with other players and AI-controlled enemies, complete quests , and strive to reach extraction points to escape to their hideout or transit to other zones. EFT emphasizes realism through detailed weapon customization, complex health management systems, and realistic ballistics. A distinctive feature is the high-stakes nature of gameplay : if a player dies during a raid, they lose all the equipment and items they brought in or collected, unless they have insured their gear and it remains unclaimed by others. EFT also features an RPG-like skill system , allowing for character progression. Unlike many games, there are no skill points to assign. The skills progress organically by performing actions related to them (e.g., you increase your Strength skill by running while overweight). Beyond raids, players can enhance their "Hideout", an underground shelter that provides various in-game benefits and crafting opportunities. The game also offers a dynamic economy , allowing players to trade with NPC merchants and other players through a Flea Market. Quests from traders provide objectives that, when completed, increase trader loyalty and unlock new items and crafting recipes. Escape from Tarkov is renowned for its steep learning curve and intense, immersive gameplay, appealing to players seeking a challenging and realistic shooter experience. The challenge that EFT poses for players is intentional, and it’s what makes the game frustrating on one hand, but extremely satisfying and capable of delivering emotions that other games simply can't offer to those who, after studying its features and mechanics and improving their combat and survival skills, manage to succeed in their raids . Release Date After more than a decade in closed beta, Escape from Tarkov has finally reached a historic milestone: its official release on November 15, 2025 . For years, many believed this moment would never come, convinced that Battlestate Games would abandon the project before crossing the finish line. Instead, Nikita Buyanov and the entire BSG team proved otherwise , showing unwavering belief in their vision and carrying it through to release. And this is far from the end: with a commitment to at least ten more years of development and new content , the journey is only just beginning. Strap in. To get comfortable with combat, I suggest starting on the Factory map in Practice Mode . It’s small, and you’ll encounter enemies quickly. Plus, it loads quickly, so if you die or run out of ammo, you can reset and start again in no time. However, combat on Factory is often close-quarters and intense, so after a while, it’s a good idea to also practice on Ground Zero, Customs, or Woods. These maps offer combat at more varied distances , with opportunities for tactical positioning and movement . Note: Weapon modding is a major aspect of Escape from Tarkov, but if you're starting from scratch as a level 1 PMC with level 1 traders, your options are quite limited. Traders offer very few weapons and attachments, and your ammo selection is similarly restricted. On top of that, you won’t have access to the Flea Market. Because of these limitations, I won’t delve into weapon modding just yet. We’ll explore this topic later, but if you’re curious about what’s available with level 1 traders and no Flea Market, check out this video by Gigabeef: The Best Level 1 Weapons & Ammo In Tarkov Patch 0.16! This is likely because they’re somewhat experienced in the game, know where to find these items on the maps, and have a fast-paced playstyle that leads them to extract early, so they don’t easily run out of energy or hydration. However, running out of energy and hydration during a raid is a serious problem and can lead to death because you start taking constant damage from dehydration and fatigue, plus other side effects . Personally, I follow the school of thought that considers always bringing food and water into raids a smart decision for the following reasons: There are already enough dangers and things trying to kill me during raids. I prefer not to have to worry about finding something to eat or drink because I’m about to die of hunger or thirst. It’s not a big deal to carry them. If I need space, I can either consume what I brought and free up that space or, if I don’t have time, discard the food and water. Having your stomach blacked out (destroyed) is quite easy, especially if you’re not wearing good armor that covers it. As stated in the EFT Wiki Health system page , when this happens, it causes significant dehydration and energy loss. Even if you heal it quickly with a surgical kit, you might still find yourself in a difficult situation, especially in the second half of a raid when your hydration and energy levels may already be low. Lastly, some argue that there’s no need to bring food and drinks into raids when you’ve maxed out the Metabolism skill (Elite level), as you won’t take damage when reaching zero hydration and energy. However, even at the Elite level of Metabolism, stamina regeneration is still severely affected by low energy and hydration levels. This isn’t a consequence-free condition. Being unable to run for long because your stamina depletes quickly results in poor mobility during combat. Additionally, if the raid timer is running out, you might not make it to the extraction point in time. You’ll also have many actions to perform during a raid , such as navigating, spotting enemies, making tactical choices, healing, eating, drinking, looting, reloading, filling your mags and—most importantly—surviving. You need to become familiar with every aspect of the game and each action it entails. Experience will help you learn the routines that allow you to focus on the essentials . EFT isn’t a game that offers instant gratification—in fact, you’ll likely experience more frustration at first. It’s a game that requires patience and dedication, but in return, it delivers some of the most intense emotions and satisfaction that a game can offer. Your first goal is to learn how to enter a raid and extract without getting killed , using one of the designated extraction points within the time limit. If you get killed or run out of time, you’ll lose everything . But if you survive, you’ll get a well deserved dopamine hit and enjoy the rewards of your loot! Consider a situation where you’re waiting behind a corner after hearing an enemy nearby. Unfortunately, the enemy may have also heard or seen you and knows your position. If they decide to peek out and shoot, they’ll have a double advantage because: You’ll have a reaction delay before you start shooting. Since it’s an online game, even with a great connection, there’s always a slight delay between pressing the trigger and the game servers registering and processing your action. You may experience other kind of lags (e.g. input lag). That’s why it’s crucial to understand how to act in each situation. Never assume that an enemy you’ve spotted hasn’t spotted you in return. Always assess carefully before deciding whether to stay still or take action. If you’re unsure, take action. To gain an advantage, you need to grasp the finer details of firearms, ammunition types, and equipment. There’s a lot to say about this topic, but since you're just starting out, it's better to focus on the basics . First, because you're still learning how to survive. Second, because your options are very limited at the beginning. You don't have access to the Flea Market, and your reputation with traders is low, which limits what you can buy from them. And third, most importantly, what you need is to make experience raiding . For now, the best choice is a simple and effective kit that's fast to put together. So that when you die, you can build another quickly and back into the next raid. You'll always have time to deepen your knowledge through articles here on The Tarkov Central and many other online sources later. Since every time you go on a raid, you risk everything you bring with you (except in Practice Mode, of course), it's important to carefully balance your equipment. Bring what you might need to overcome challenges, but don’t overdo it . Your gear also needs to be suitable for your raid objective and your survival chances . Unfortunately, money matters too, meaning the cost of what you're risking by bringing it into the raid also plays a role. It's quite common to start an action like healing or eating and suddenly hear enemy footsteps approaching—or even worse, to find yourself under enemy fire. Healing, Food, and Drinks For healing, food, and drinks, you can simply press the right mouse button , and the action will be interrupted. However, you’ll have to wait for your character to stop the action and put away the item they were using. Some actions stop faster than others , while some take longer to cancel. The action that takes the longest to interrupt is surgery using a surgical kit. Since this action gives you a significant advantage by allowing you to restore a blacked-out limb, it also comes with major limitations. Not only does it force you to remain stationary , but it also requires more time to be interrupted. Losing the Item in Use or some of its Charges For healing items and drinks with multiple charges, interrupting the action has no downsides . The action will stop at whatever point you reached, leaving the effects of the usage intact. For example, if you are healing a missing 50 HP in your torso and you interrupt at 25 HP, the action will stop, you’ll have healed only 25 HP, and the medkit will have 25 HP worth of charge deducted. The same applies to drinking. If you’re drinking from a water bottle with 60 charges and you stop at 30, your thirst will be reduced accordingly, and 30 charges will be used up from the bottle. However, for certain items, you can lose the item itself or one of its charges and get no effect . For example, let’s consider a food can with a single charge. If you interrupt the eating action immediately, your character will simply close the can and put it away—you won’t lose it. If you interrupt later, your character will still put it away, but the item will be lost entirely, with no effect on your hunger. This applies to single-use food and drink items, as well as surgical kits. TIP: If you try to perform two actions that can’t be done simultaneously, the second one will interrupt the first. If you were using an item with a charge, you will lose that charge without gaining its benefit. For example, if you interrupt surgery by trying to fill a magazine with ammo, you will lose a charge from the surgical kit without completing the surgery. Using Animation Interruption to Speed Up Healing Interrupting animations isn’t just useful for reacting to emergencies—it can also be strategically used to speed up healing . When using a medkit, only the first part of the animation is actually needed to restore HP . The second part of the animation is only required when the medkit is being used to remove additional effects like bleeding or fractures. This means that if you only need to restore HP, you can interrupt the healing action early as soon as you see the medkit’s charge number decrease—this indicates that the healing has already been applied. By mastering this technique, you can save precious seconds , allowing you to heal efficiently without being locked into a full animation unnecessarily. If you need to heal multiple body parts, this can save you even more time, as you’ll shave off seconds from each heal. If you want to know more about this, see it in action as well as a comparison to the recently introduced continuous healing mechanic to see which technique is the most effective, I suggest you to watch this video by Gigabeef . Special Case: Individually-Loaded Weapons In Escape from Tarkov, you may find yourself using weapons that don’t have removable magazines and must be reloaded one bullet at a time . This is the case with many shotguns, as well as rifles like the SKS and Mosin. When you press R to reload one of these weapons, your character will start loading rounds one by one until the internal magazine is full. This process takes several seconds, but what happens if an enemy suddenly appears while you’re in the middle of reloading? Or if you're in the middle of combat and only want to reload 2-3 rounds so you can start shooting again as soon as possible? If you need to interrupt the reload, instead of pressing the right mouse button like you do to interrupt other actions, press the left mouse button , as if you were about to fire. Even in this case, the action won’t stop instantly —you’ll likely load one more bullet before stopping (depending on the exact moment you press the left mouse button)—but then you'll be ready to shoot. For safety, you can also press the left mouse button multiple times, but be careful not to keep clicking for too long, or you might accidentally fire a shot when the reload animation stops. Practice! Since interrupting actions usually happens in high-stress situations, it's best to be familiar with how it works in advance . Knowing the timing required can make a big difference. I strongly recommend practicing in Practice Mode, so you don’t risk losing charges or items unnecessarily. This is especially true for interrupting individually-loaded weapon reloads, which can sometimes be a bit tricky to get right and can determine the outcome of a fight. Now that the game has officially been released, the main storyline and quest structure are finally in place, providing a clearer narrative backbone to the Tarkov conflict. However, this does not force players into a single, rigid path. While the storyline offers direction, context, and long-term objectives, it coexists with the sandbox nature that has always defined the experience. Players are still free to approach raids, progression, and risk in their own way , whether they focus on quests, PvP, survival, looting, or experimentation. Ultimately, what makes every raid in Escape from Tarkov truly unique is this diversity of playstyles. Each raid becomes a dynamic encounter shaped by countless individual decisions , and by players interacting with one another in unpredictable ways , creating an almost infinite number of possible outcomes. The Race Many players love the competitive aspect of the game, which is currently centered around the race that begins with each profile wipe. Wipes create a recurring cycle where all players start from level 1 and race to level up faster than others to gain a competitive advantage in terms of equipment, weapons, money, and skills, ultimately striving to prevail over others. Living Tarkov While the competitive race appeals to many, others prefer to immerse themselves in "living" the survival experience that Escape from Tarkov offers. These players focus on its intricate landscapes, amidst the chaos, and simply in the game’s deeply immersive world. For them, Tarkov is less about victory and more about the journey —discovering hidden treasures, mastering the terrain, and crafting their own stories of survival and resilience. Playstyles and Freedom Players who adopt a less competitive approach can still enjoy the game and hold their own against more competitive players with better gear or more playtime. Escape from Tarkov rewards not only in-game skills and equipment but also knowledge of the terrain, cleverness , and patience , allowing careful and strategic players to outsmart and "outplay" even those with superior skill and equipment. Some players lean towards a more role-playing (RP) experience, creating their own versions of the game with self-imposed rules to make it even more challenging . For example, some play without ever using the Flea Market. Some players choose to be completely peaceful , aiming never to kill anyone—whether AI or other players. Others have turned themselves into war reporters, documenting the conflict by interviewing PMC and Scav characters . Persistent Progression or Wipe Cycle With the game’s release, this freedom is reinforced by a new structural choice that directly affects how players experience Tarkov over time. Players can now choose between a profile that follows the traditional wipe cycle and a persistent profile that is not reset. This distinction naturally aligns with different approaches to the game. Those who enjoy the intensity of early progression, efficiency, and direct competition can continue to embrace the wipe-driven environment , while others can settle into a more long-term experience , advancing at their own pace and valuing immersion over competition. At the same time, nothing prevents players from moving between the two , choosing the experience that best fits their mood or the kind of fun they are looking for at any given moment. Note: At the time of writing, less than a month after the 1.0 release, this choice is not yet fully available. Players in PvP mode can currently create only a single type of character, which will become the persistent profile. The character tied to cyclical wipes will be introduced later, when the new wipe cycles officially begin. VoIP and Interaction In this context, VoIP has been a glorious addition to Escape from Tarkov , offering endless possibilities for interaction with other players : from agreeing to avoid conflicts, to making friends, just for chatting or to form alliances, to deceiving and betraying, distracting opponents, or pushing them to talk in order to better pinpoint their position and execute them. Economy and Modding There are also players who focus heavily—or even exclusively—on the game's economy, buying and reselling items, ammunition, and equipment on the Flea Market. For them, the thrill of profit and strategic trading is as rewarding as combat or exploration (if not more). Additionally, many players are passionate about weapon modding and spend a lot of time in game trying to create the ultimate meta gun, or just the best looking, or the ultimate meme gun. The Timmy, The Chad and The Rat In Escape from Tarkov, players often categorize different playstyles using community-defined archetypes. The Timmy: A new or inexperienced player, often under-geared and unfamiliar with the game’s mechanics. They tend to play cautiously but lack the skill or knowledge to navigate high-risk situations effectively. Timmies are typically seen running basic gear, avoiding fights, and looting whatever they can find. The term is often used endearingly, as many players start as Timmies before evolving into other playstyles. The Chad: An aggressive, highly skilled, and well-equipped player who seeks out PvP fights. They run expensive gear, move with confidence, and actively push engagements rather than avoiding them. Chads are known for their excellent aim, fast reflexes, and tactical movement, often dominating less experienced players or those who play defensively. Their playstyle is high-risk, high-reward, as they frequently engage in intense battles. The Rat: A player who avoids direct combat and adopts an extremely passive and opportunistic strategy. Rather than actively seeking loot or fighting enemies head-on, the Rat stays hidden in corners or dark areas for extended periods, waiting for other players to pass by so they can ambush them with minimal risk. This behavior is often seen as cowardly or unsportsmanlike, as Rats exploit the element of surprise to get easy kills without engaging in fair fights. While some players consider it a legitimate survival tactic, the community generally uses the term in a negative sense (especially those who fall victims of their traps). Each of these playstyles contributes to Tarkov’s dynamic and unpredictable nature, making encounters with other players varied and intense. There is no “intended way” to play EFT No one can tell you that you’re playing it wrong , as long as it doesn’t involve exploiting or cheating. Choose your own path, and good luck! In addition to having seven different body zones that can take damage, there are factors influenced by armor and the ballistics of weapons and ammunition. We can't cover everything in this section, as it would require an entire manual . For now, as a beginner, you just need to understand the fundamentals, starting with the fact that the entire system aims to simulate what happens in real life. Ballistics also is complicated, and I’ve explored it in detail in this article: We are not shooting laser weapons: EFT ballistics explained . Mechanics When a bullet hits a part of your body protected by armor, the penetration value of the bullet is compared to the level of the armor. This is a complex topic, but for now, you just need to know that every ten points of penetration roughly correspond to one armor level. For example: A bullet with 10 penetration will easily penetrate level 1 armor. A bullet with 20 penetration will handle level 2 armor, and so on. Conversely, a bullet with 10 penetration will struggle to penetrate level 2 armor and may require multiple hits. Each shot will damage the armor , gradually reducing its effectiveness and increasing the likelihood of penetration over time. If the bullet fails to penetrate, it will still deal blunt damage to the body part covered by the armor, in addition to damaging the armor itself. Currently, armors in EFT can have up to two layers : Plate armor, which can be replaced. An integral layer, which is part of the armor and cannot be changed (but it can be repaired). It is usually lower level than the first layer. When there are two layers, the bullet must pass through both to hit the body. If the first layer stops the bullet, the second layer may absorb all the blunt damage. Or, if the first layer doesn't stop the bullet, it may slow down the bullet and reduce its penetration power enough so that the second one will manage to stop it. Choosing Ammo Now it should be clearer the importance of using good, high-penetration ammunition. It’s often said in EFT that ammo is more important than the weapon —and it’s true. Any experienced EFT player will always prefer a cheap gun with high-quality bullets over an amazing weapon with useless ammo. In EFT, there’s a wide selection of ammunition types for each caliber. The most sought-after, rare, and expensive rounds are those with the highest penetration values . Low-penetration ammo isn’t entirely useless, though. Many body parts are unprotected—legs, for instance, are always exposed because there is currently no leg armor in the game. Arms too. Those limbs can be blacked-out by one or 2 shots and if you keep hitting them the damage wil be distributed to all other healthy limbs. Some weapons, such as pistols and SMGs, do not have access to high-penetration ammo. These weapons typically excel in other areas. SMGs, for instance, benefit from a high rate of fire , while pistols are compact and easy to handle . IMPORTANT: Be careful when loading ammo into your magazines. Some magazines are compatible with multiple types of ammunition. For example, magazines for 7.62x39mm rounds can also fit .300 Blackout rounds. You don’t want to load into a raid only to realize you’ve used the wrong ammo and can’t fire your weapon! Choosing Armor Armor selection shouldn’t be based solely on its protection level. While higher protection is better, it often comes with drawbacks: Increased weight. Reduced mobility. Higher cost or rarity. At the beginning, your choices will be limited to what’s available in your stash, what you find during raids, and what little traders will sell to you. Later on, with access to the Flea Market and by unlocking new items from traders, you can create preferred loadouts depending on the missions or tasks you aim to complete during a raid. A good benchmark is consistently wearing level 4 armor. At this stage, you’ll be well protected against Scavs, who typically use low-penetration ammo. Against players, however, there will be a fair number with ammo that exceeds 40 penetration points, but not everyone will have it . This also depends on the point in the wipe cycle . At the end of a wipe, many players have high-penetration ammo and armor above level 4 . Likewise, ammo with penetration around or above 40 is considered high-quality , worth collecting if found during a raid, and should be used sparingly. Keep in mind that ammo with penetration above 42 cannot be purchased from the Flea Market . It can be bought from some traders for specific calibers, but only after completing certain quests. Alternatively, it can be crafted in your Hideout—but only after unlocking the required crafts through quests. Not too long ago, players were advised to start with "Customs" and "Woods" (why? Check out the article on the best maps for learning EFT ), mainly because early missions took place there. They’re still solid maps for learning the game. But then BSG introduced a new map called Ground Zero , where you’ll complete your first four missions and only encounter players up to level 20 . Players level 21 and above are placed in separate instances. This setup ensures you won’t face highly skilled players with significantly better gear—though you should still be cautious during the periods immediately following a wipe! So, start by learning Ground Zero . However, if raiding there starts feeling repetitive, you can explore Customs and Woods. You’ll eventually need to head there for missions following those on Ground Zero, and they remain excellent maps for beginners . Factory is another good option, but initially mainly for practicing combat against AI. I don’t recommend it for your first “real” raids, as combat there is fast-paced and in close quarters (CQC), where more experienced players with map and combat knowledge have a significant advantage. Focus on one or two maps at most to start, as they are complex and intricate. You’ll need to develop a sense of direction and get comfortable with game mechanics. On the other hand, once you gain some experience with EFT, learning the other maps becomes much easier . Sure, there are cheaters, and there’s little you can do against them. But don’t assume that every “weird” death is due to cheats. Most of the time, when you lose a fight, it’s because of your own mistakes , and if you want to improve, you need to accept it and understand what went wrong. You’ll die a lot. You have to accept this too. Often, you won’t even know where the shot came from or how they knew your position. It’s normal to die frequently, and it’s normal for some deaths to feel impossible to survive. But with experience, you’ll start to understand and learn the “tricks of the trade”. Don’t give up —what seems impossible now will become achievable, and you’ll eventually pull off feats you once thought were beyond your reach . One great way to improve is to record your raids or enable the feature to save the last few minutes of gameplay (using Nvidia App or other AMD or third-party apps like Outplayed). Review the fight and analyze what went wrong and how you could have done better. You need to build some sort of mental maps , so that the next time you find yourself in that situation, you will react swiftly and (hopefully) in the right way . Escape from Tarkov is a complex game, full of activities that can consume too much of your time. You need to limit and manage them according to your in-game goals. Since we are talking about learning to play EFT from scratch, here are some tips: Balance the time spent in the Hideout Sorting out items in your stash, selling, buying, reselling, and repairing can take up a lot of time. Try to complete these tasks quickly so you can return to raiding. Don’t spend too much time on weapon modding either—study and learn it, but don’t overdo it. Minimize downtime by using simple and consistent kits Unfortunately, you will die often in EFT, and preparing for the next raid can take a long time if you’re not well-organized and clear about what you need. Try to memorize a standard loadout that you can assemble quickly, knowing exactly where to find everything you need. It may not seem like much, but when you add up all the time lost, you’ll realize you’re wasting a huge amount of time that could have been spent practicing in raids and accelerating your learning process. Use Scav Kits Either have a quick Scav run, extract as soon as possible and then pass the Scav gear to your PMC. Repair the weapon and armor (if not present buy a cheap one), add the needed consumables (healing, ammo, etc.) and hop in a raid. You are learning, so the most important thing is to gain experience in raids with your PMC At first, players worry too much about money and accumulating wealth. Making money isn’t difficult, but you need to learn how to survive until extraction. Using the Scav to loot and resell items is a great way to boost your finances, but don’t overdo it. You learn more by playing your PMC. Experience will make you better, allowing you to extract safely more often and, consequently, earn more money. If you don’t gain raid experience, you will always struggle to make money (and will keep losing it by dying). Moreover, you won’t earn experience points, level up your PMC, build trader reputation by completing quests, or improve skills that make your PMC stronger, faster, and more resilient. Save time in every possible way Find shortcuts and ways to be more efficient. For example, if you see that selling an item to a trader gives you only slightly less money than selling it on the Flea Market, sell it to the trader. You’ll save a lot of time. Similarly, if you need to mod a weapon, don’t waste time searching for parts in your stash. Instead, use the "Modding" option from the menu that appears when you right-click on your weapon. This will allow you to select attachments from the various menus, showing only the mods you have in your stash (the weapon must be in the stash, not equipped on your PMC, and you need to have Workbench Level 1 in your Hideout). As stated in the previous chapter’s title, now it’s your turn to improve by practicing and learning more and more about Escape from Tarkov. Here are some tips. Combat Practice The only way to truly get better at combat and survive raids is to do as many as possible . However, to earn money, financially support your character, and improve your hideout, you need to extract successfully with your loot. This will lead you to play conservatively , avoiding fights and dangers. There is nothing wrong in playing safe and avoid or even flee from fights. It's part of the game. Playing this way, though, will reduce your combat opportunities , especially against other players in PvP. You might even go through entire raids without encountering a single enemy player. I realized that this slowed down my learning and improvement, so I recommend keeping your combat skills sharp in three ways: Running raids in Practice Mode against AI while playing more aggressively. Using budget kits or gear looted from Scavs and playing aggressively, actively seeking fights with other players. This is the only real way to improve your skills and tactics. Playing on Factory , a small, condensed map where encounters with other players are frequent. If you have it, playing the PvE mode , where the presence of AI PMCs means facing more challenging AI enemies than regular Scavs. If you have it, playing Escape from Tarkov: Arena —while its gameplay differs from EFT’s core experience by focusing on pure, fast-paced combat in small maps, it is an excellent way to train your fighting skills. Additionally, playing EFT: Arena allows you to earn money, level up your character in EFT, and improve their skills. Reviewing Your Actions One common and useful tip—one that I also found valuable—is recording your raids and watching them later . Alternatively, you can enable the feature that saves the last few minutes of gameplay for review. Watching your raids is extremely instructive because it helps you understand where you made mistakes and how your opponent outplayed you . You’ll notice things you missed in the heat of the moment and mentally map out strategies to improve in future fights and avoid repeating the same errors (which you’ll probably still make for a while, but over time, you’ll learn to minimize them). Information and Learning I have been playing EFT for almost four years, and I still learn something new every day . That’s why I enjoy gathering information and writing articles and guides—hoping to help others learn and stay updated. But this also means that, much like in real life, you never truly stop learning in EFT. While playing, I often come across someone using a trick that surprises me. Reading threads and posts on Reddit, I constantly discover new things. Watching videos and streams on YouTube helps me uncover aspects of the game I hadn’t noticed before. So I encourage you to do the same: First and foremost, keep visiting The Tarkov Central , where I aim to publish something interesting every day, along with updates on everything related to EFT, its community, and the developers. In particular, check the Tips & Tricks & Bugs , the Game Features and the Deep-Dives sections. Plus the News page to stay updated about the game. Follow YouTube creators and streamers who provide valuable content , such as Pestily (great to learn general info about EFT) , Gigabeef (deep-dives about guns modding and game mechanics) , Axel_tv, Airwingmarine (news about EFT) , NoGenerals , JesseKazam , DeadlySlob ,Glorious_E , SheefGG and DesmondPilak . Additionally, some lesser-known but still informative and engaging creators include SoloReserveOnly (who plays almost exclusively on Reserve, making him an excellent resource for learning that map), Sleek , and MaskedFPS (both of whom play solo and have a calm playstyle, making their content great for learning). Check out Reddit subreddit r/EscapefromTarkov , where you can always find interesting posts and info about EFT. I get a lot of useful info and cues from Reddit, so I think it's a great source. But don’t let toxic posts discourage you —many people only focus on complaints, criticizing the developers, and pointing out the game’s flaws rather than appreciating its merits. No doubts EFT has flaws, cheaters, bugs, etc., but IMO it's still one of the best games ever. Keep in mind angry/disappointed/snoflakes always complain, while happy people don't post much on Reddit and just play the game! Once I almost stopped playing because of the negativity absorbed on Reddit, so be careful. There is another subreddit, r/Tarkov , but that's less moderated. Unfortunately, this sometimes means there’s more toxicity. So read, grab the useful info — but don’t get intoxicated! Improve Your Aim f you struggle to hit your targets, or even if you do but want to improve, I suggest two things: Learn about mouse sensitivity, DPI, and Polling Rate settings. You may be using a sensitivity or DPI setting that’s too high, which can negatively affect accuracy. Also, a high Polling Rate is crucial for reducing input latency and increasing precision. When I started playing EFT I had a cheap mouse and when I changed it with a better one, with a higher Polling Rate, the improvement in my aiming was huge. Try aim training programs like Aimlabs , which you can get for free on Steam. I used it when I first started playing Escape from Tarkov, and within a few days, I saw a significant improvement. It also helps you identify where your skills are lacking. My biggest weakness was tracking—I could land the first shot, but keeping my aim on a moving target was my biggest challenge. Now, I’m much better at it. Play With More Experienced Players Due to its complexity and steep learning curve, BSG has implemented the Sherpa Program , where volunteer players participate in teaching newcomers or those struggling to progress. Another alternative is to join Discord servers and find people to play with. You might come across some unpleasant individuals, but it's usually easy to find helpful and friendly experienced players willing to assist. You can try the Official Discord server or servers hosted by streamers such as Pestily or JesseKazam. Finding other inexperienced players to share defeats and noobness with can also help ease frustration . Learning together through failure—while laughing about it—can make the experience more enjoyable. You can also check the r/EFT_LFG subreddit to find players or group of players to play with , have fun and learn from others. Be Patient and Resilient As we’ve already discussed, playing and improving in EFT requires persistence and determination. This applies to many things in life, and I assure you that if you stay committed, your progress will come. Soon, you’ll surprise yourself by executing strategies and winning fights in ways you never expected—all because of the experience, learning and practice you’ve built over time.
